Which club?

As a new P6 owner i am keen to absorb as much info as possible, I have to get up to speed as best i can and as fast as possible. I have a lot to learn.

This forum is an amazing resourse for a noob like me, but i am wondering whether it is worthwhile joining a club, which one to join (why are there two?), what I will gain (in addition to the info available here) or whether i will benifit at all considering i live in France meaning I will be unable to join any social events or get togethers etc.

Hi,

There are actually three clubs to consider;

The Rover Sports Register is the oldest Rover club in the world, having formed in the 1950s. Although it doesn't have a huge P6 following, it is a very worthwhile club.

The Rover P6 Club, formerly the Rover P6 Drivers' Club was formed by former members of the P6 Rover Owners Club over 20 years ago, and is run by a committee of members.

The P6 Rover Owners Club was the original P6 club, and is currently owned by a former member.

All three clubs have their pros and cons.

My suggestion (as to all new P6 owners) would be to join both of the P6 clubs - P6 Club and P6ROC - for 12 months, and then make a decision as to which club best suits you, and which gives you the information that you are after.

The RSR is a long-lasting club, so joining that in addition to one (or both) of the P6 clubs is also worthwile.

Regards,

Chris

Which is exactly what I did! Only trouble was, after the year was up I still couldn't decide which as both had been extremely helpful with the issues I had with the car! So much so that I'm still a member of one whilst my daughter is still a member of the other.

Ironically my local meet in Worcestershire is a joint meeting of both clubs!!

As someone who has come from outside and so knows nothing of the history about why the one P6 club split into two clubs (I don't want to know why either!!) I find the situation b****y stupid (and that's being polite) forcing newcomers to have to choose one or the other or both. It's about time the toys were returned to the pram and we went back to one club.

However having heard some of the older members talking about it I can't see it ever happening.

it is perfectly natural for 1 club to split into two, the number of "forums" that I set up for various employee groups 10 years ago soon (to my dismay) split off into "mimic" sites who thought they could do better, some were better than others of course but this is continually happening in clubs, forums and websites as time goes on, its almost a case of evolution , members in the original club/ forums are either jubilant, annoyed or indifferent and none are wrong :D just take your choice

I never said it wasn't, but in virtually all cases (and in this case) it's a stupid idea and no-one is the long term winner especially prospective new members who then have to make the decision which one to join. Things are expensive enough without that choice! ;)

The P6 Club was formed when a group of people didn't like the way that the P6ROC was being run. It's a pretty common story. The two clubs will never combine, which to me is pretty stupid. We have less P6's on the road than ever, with many being forced off due to rust and a declining amount of parts.

It makes sense to look at combining the clubs into a single entity with an outlook geared towards preserving both the history of the P6, and the cars themselves. I did try to suggest this approach a couple of years ago, but the problem with committee-driven clubs is that there are always egos involved.

A lot has changed since I posted in 2014. I'm still a member of the P6ROC, and am glad to support both the club and Deborah.

joined P6 ROC some years ago (membership now due again .how fast that comes around) spoke to other club when doing my yearly visits to NEC show. ( not this year though) aware clubs do split an Amy own local club ( whom will remain nameless ) also has member/committee issues so can see why clubs split though logically with a single marque /model it would seem illogical to not bury the hatchet and merge. I suspect much like Ford and Fiat 'nearly' merged but didn't was due to both management teams thinking they ought to run everything and were unwilling to allow opposition to take over, so history shows they never merged! possibly same with rover clubs. Own local club might split but currently as membership levels falling might even cease to exist. such is life. luckily another fairly local club? ( no membership needed or fees) operates much as other clubs with shows and events such (xmas. dinner etc) problem with multi car clubs is often lack of specialised help and advise . this site alone is brilliant for technical assistance and advise. Not been to other rover events as all too far away etc though I did manage the cold 'break the ice' meet at Enfield car museum once! (Whitewebbs museum of transport) and few visits to the yearly car show/event just up the road. well worth a visit I found with auto jumble.car clubs. steam traction engine.fair and stall holders all over a long weekend. happy Rovereing ..
