Need to get a new water pump for my 3500s, fleabay has some but one says it is the short nose one, which one do I have above, does it make any difference. cheers Mick

Thats a high volume pump, which has extra vanes but is otherwise identical to the standard item, all of which are the same except for those cars with a viscous coupling. (VIP's and NADAs). the one you have is what is commonly called the short nose version.

I am going to replace my waterpump, the one I have is a high volume one ie 12 vanes on it rather than the normal 6 vanes. Ian at rover classics has the standard pump as do eBay. Anyone know where to get the high volume one. I'm not suffering any overheating problems with the high volume pump so am a bit worried if I put a standard pump in I migh have problems. Cheers. Mick.

A lot of the time the high volume pumps are fitted in an effort to cure problems caused by other things, notably the bleed pipe in the manifold, but if you decide you do want one then JRW sell them.

Was in touch with them. No they have none and have said they can't get them anymore so Its the standard one only. Everyone I tried does not do them.

If you were really desperate I'm sure you could either recon the one you've got, or swap the impeller into a standard new one. You'll need access to a press to strip it, but it is possible.

Will fit a standard one, if I start getting any problems will go down the route of sorting this one out. Cheers.

Hi Mick,

I'd be interested to see a pic of the water pump that you purchase prior to fitting. The ones that I have have impellers with curved blades that are of a larger diameter to the item that you have pictured above.
I recall seeing one like yours some years ago, came from a business in Brisbane, and it too had a smaller diameter cast iron impeller. All the pumps fitted to Rovers for the Australian market have viscous couplings running with 13 bladed nylon fans, so our pumps are not interchangeable with U.K market cars except for the VIP cars as has been noted above.

I like the design of that Ron, I wonder if the curved shape of your vanes push more water around ie they scoop water as they spin. Will post a pic before fitting new one.

Much better idea :) My first P6 had one, so its not unheard of.... but you cant get them now afaik.

I doubt it because the vanes are curved the wrong way. As you look at the pic of that pump it will be spinning anti-clockwise when it's on the car.

Ahhhh but Ron is in Australia aren't they upside down !!!! you didn't think of that Harvey. Good spot anyway.

Very true, but I never consider anything other than good old British cars, not those exported to our friends abroad.

Nothing to do with scooping water etc and everything to do with fluid dynamics.

The curved vanes will work in much the same way as the curved blades on an electric coolant fan and I'll let Chris York explain that when he gets a chance

So the water is "sucked" from the hose and forced into the block ?
