Hi all,
purely from curiosity, do you use your P6 for the daily commute?
Ive seen posts made by members on this forum, using their P6 for their daily commute, covering some large distances annually.

thanks
rob

I live less than a mile from work so don't 'commute' by car. However I'm often out of the office seeing clients mostly within a 50 mile radius, so use a P6 on those days in all weathers but salt. My annual P6 mileage is therefore not actually that big - around 6,000, but the cars get regular use :)

I do. Except for last week which was threatening bad weather so I used my Series Land Rover.
When the P6 was getting a respray I used my P4 for a while, alternating with the Land Rover. That worked fairly well but it was a relief getting back in the P6 which feels a lot lighter. While the P4 can be relaxing to drive, you do need to plan ahead a lot more, at least when fitted with the lower powered 75 engine.

I did (not working ATM) on dry days. It was absolutely fine and I got lots of thumbs up! It's not that I worry about getting it wet, if it rains I don't fret, it's more about extending its life as much as possible. Plus the wipers are crap compare to any modern! I had one failure. The coil went. After inconveniently it started and drove 100m into commuter traffic before stopping and then refusing to move.

I used to, but not now. The miles and weather were taking their toll on the car so I took her out of daily use a little over 2 years ago. My round trip is about 60 miles and I was clocking up just short of 20k a year with commuting and business mileage. Apart from a clutch failure and a spell of burning out exhaust valves at an alarming rate, she was generally very reliable. I would love to keep using her more often, but despite my efforts to keep her clean and rust free over the years, the deterioration creeps up slowly but surely so she now rests inside during the winter weather.

It's easy to forget that our cars are around 50 years old! They used to be rusty after 5 or 6 years in the '60s & '70s so the survivors are now around 10 times that age. And no galvanised steel, wheel arch liners, rust-proofing etc.

If P6s were more like the standard fare of the day; Morris Minors, Austin A60s, & the like (...each to their own, etc) we would probably more readily recognise they are from a different era, but because they're so accomplished you tend to forget you're driving such an old car.

To be fair, it you repaint the underneath with modern epoxy instead of the hideous underseal that cars had and pump it full of DInitrol it should last pretty well in most conditions. The best part being you can remove panels and get it in all the places you need.

I used to use mine regularly when I lived near work, but now my commute is a 75 mile round trip with lots of traffic so I don't. Used to love rolling into work in them. I need to address cooling issues across all cars this year, and when I'm done I might try again. My journey is complete torture, and I've gotten lazy in my modern car with its heated seats and autobox! If I had the time and money I'd drip the same engine and box into one of my P6s and create the ultimate commuter!

Interesting - I'm retired now, but between 2000 & 2003 I used a 1955 Sunbeam 90 for a daily 30 miles.
It handled it really well, with impressive reliability, but I couldn't keep up with the corrosion and eventually the body was shot (1950's Rootes 'quality') and I sold it on, 'for restoration'.
After the deal was done the purchaser was quite open about the fact that he bought it for the registration and the car didn't have a future - sad.

I use my Rover on a daily basis. If I only travel between work and home each day, I'll typically do close to 50 miles each day. If on the other hand I stay at my girlfriend's house, which I do more often than not, then my daily commute is 120 miles. My Rover has been a daily driver for most of its 45 years, with over 383,000 miles (617,000km) covered. It tends to be mostly reliable, which is clearly a good thing. Electronic ignition, which I fitted some 28 years ago was one of the best ways to spend money.

Ron.

I never cease to be astonished at the mileage your P6 has clocked up.

yes it is a dilemma in the summer , motorbike or V8, if you have the facility to park either at your workplace that is pretty good and that is my situation now luckily. have been commuting by motorbike 100% last few years but that is just about to change now that I have a P6 again :D
