Hi All .
one for the computer wizards . I'm getting a pop up window when i restart the lap top saying the end of windows technical support and updates for XP is coming on April 2014 . I had a bit of a read through a link it gave , didn't really understand how it'll affect me . I don't think it's just going to shut down . Anyone else seen it or understand ? :D

Hi Stina,

Unless you want to upgrade your lappy, I'd ignore it. Your Windows XP should continue to work just as it does now. It's just that Microsoft will no longer support it from April and will not give you any more updates - those automatic updates that get performed from time to time when you try to shut down your lappy and it does an update.

No more updates equals no more security patches.. so make sure your anti-virus and firewall software are kept up to date.

I have windows 7 and 8 on my computers and its always after any update I seem to have problems, windows 7 I think is great, windows 8 was not an improvement in my eyes, all dragging and swiping to exit a page, whats wrong with clicking X.

If you can get hold of some Windows 7 CD, I would install this. However you will need to reinstall the drivers. What sort of laptop do you have? If it is a Dell then you can download the drivers directly for the Dell website. Shortly I am going to back up this computer and install windows 7. Avoid Windows 8 or Vista like the plague. Windows 8 is so problematic the HP charges more for a computer with Windows 8 on it, to cover the technical support.

I would not buy a computer with windows 8. We had one at work, and it was very difficult to change it to Windows 7.

James.

one of the most annoy things with windows 8 is Microsoft making it impossible for you to have google as your default search engine, you have to have bing which is also owned and run by them, its probably difficult to buy a new laptop now that isn't on windows 8.

Hewlett Packard still sell them with windows 7 I believe.

xp will work just fine for now - i wouldnt bother upgrading unless you see some other pressing need or you buy/get someone to build you a new pc. I still have xp on my music pc here.

windows 8 can be fixed by installing classic shell (It is actually faster than windows 7 running the same software on the same hardware, so better to have 8 and fix it!)

Tell me more, please. Madame has a laptop which had W8 on it and some cretin at a local computer store tried to load W7 onto it
but didn't know that the license/serial number of W8 is stored in the BIOS or somewhere similarly obscure and it ballsed the whole
thing up thoroughly. It's now running a bootleg copy of W8 and is in grave danger of becoming an expensive frisbee soon.

Thanks guys .
Some good info . I don't plan to change what i've got until i have to , i'll certainly be on here for advice when the time comes . I'm not much of a computer boffin , but i've learned enough to help my mother in law get started and She bought a W8 laptop on some experts advice , i've got her going with it but i don't really like some of the ways it does things . Thought it was just me , but appears not just me . :D

Hi john. Most laptops come with a factory reset. What is the make and model? P.s. no reason you can't install 7 if you know what you're doing..

It's a LENOVO G580 and the PS in your post automatically excludes Yours Truly.......

see if this works...

On boot up (before Windows loads) press the F11 key for a few seconds to start the Recovery Program and follow on-screen prompts.

***This will erase all your unsaved data!***

I also have XP on the desk-top & I normally leave the computer on standby to cut down the start-up time. Today I came to it to find it alive with a host of programs running, seemingly updating & the display had reverted to what looked like a default position with a lot of my shortcuts & folder contents/documents missing. I also have an external drive which has back-up of everything on it which I disconnected in a bit of a panic, along with the broadband connection & re-started the system which took a while considering the amount of things that were trying to operate & went to make a cup of tea to recover my composure.
I got the laptop & googled system recovery which said that it would not recover files or documents so I re-connected the external drive & discovered that it had everything intact, all photo's, files, etc.....: proceeded with the system restore which told me that G: (which I can't find so may have been C:) would not be restored as previous date recovery had been excluded from the latest activity. On restoration however, to all visual appearances the system is back to normal & my links & folder contents are back in place.
I was wondering if this was something set in place by Windows due to the XP support being withdrawn but would it have over-ridden the standby mode? Has anyone else had this? I googled for such occurences for today but didn't come up with anything.
Or there is another possible cause. I normally stand the keyboard up when not in use to prevent one of the cats sitting on it & setting the computer off on some random quest. I can't recall now if I had done so & where the keyboard was when I sat down at the computer. So now I don't know if Lola is a secret computer wizard & updates systems using only the power of her paws & derriere'. I shan't be leaving it on standby overnight in future.

It goes to show though, how much of your life gets put onto these things now & what a hassle & disappointment can be caused by failure of the equipment with no back-up contingency.

cat sounds most likely... windows support period is irrelevant to this. They just wont fix problems they find in windows xp....
