Windscreen Replacement

Would appreciate some tips as I am part way through the process.

1. When I removed the old screen there was no support channel in evidence so the screen was sitting on the two jacking points and the centre bracket. Any thoughts as to how important this metal channel is? The screen I am taking out is scratched (this is the reason for replacing it) but does not appear to have suffered any ill effects. Does anybody have one of these metal channels for sale (ideally somebody in NZ)?

2. There is no sign of neoprene blocks - can't quite tell from the manul but it looks like there are supposed to be two (or maybe three?). Again are these important? And if so available?

3. I have removed the chrome trims on the A Pillars but not the chrome strip across the screen top which does not seem to want to budge. The manual says that it should be removed but I'd rather not if it is not necessary. I have read at least one thread that indicated that none of the chrome needs to come off - is it possible to seat the seal effectively without removing this top strip?

4. Whoever fitted the current screen (definitely DIY) has smeared black sealer (Sealastic?) all over the show and it is really hard to remove it from the base unit whithout scratching the paint. Can anybody think of a substance that would dissolve it without damaging the paint?

Thks

Have spoken to our friendly local commercial windscreen replacer and he has recommended kerosene to remove the excessive deposits of black sealant from the bodywork + chrome. Had a trial run tonight and kerosene together with a stiff plastic scraper does seem to work! He said that it won't damage the paintwork - guess I'll find out when daylight returns....
