Well this is weird.

Car is back together after a stripped water pump bolt. All started up fine, ran nicely so I thought I'd time it up properly rather than just guessing.

But I can't, cos the vacuum advance hits the top hose where it's on the stat housing. Eh? Can't get less advance than about 15 degrees.

So I cunningly moved all the ht leads round by one. Now its really retarded and with a sense of kinship I can't get it to turn the other way cos the electronic thingy hits the steady bar.

Now I'm sure that I put the new timing chain on right, and the things lined up and everything. But not that sure any more... Is that the only explanation for this?

Any ideas gratefully received!

Take out the dizzy and turn the shaft one tooth, then put it back.

Worked for me 8)

Take the dizzy out again and move it round one tooth , Can't think which way without going out and looking , but pretty self explanetry when your looking at it , it'll just move the dizzy into a plane where it has adjustment before hitting hoses / housings etc . And how do i know this ? !!

I had the same scenario when I changed my oil pump etc . Like Stina says just a cog placement away from working perfectly .
You're nearly there
Well done

oh well, seems it's not just me that's done that! pleased I don't have to take it all to bits again. phew! A job for tomorrow night, as it's chucking it down here and running it in the garage is a tad fumey..

Thanks all :)

Hi, be aware if you turn the dist one tooth as suggested you will have to turn the oil pump
shaft as well, otherwise the dist won't go fully home.

that's the missing bit of information I'd forgotten. Seeing as I'd been spinning the oil pump shaft round with a drill and then just slotted the distributor home I'm surprised the thing started at all! Total fluke that the pump shaft slot lined roughly up. off out to fix it now :)

Fixed!! Thanks all. Running great but mixture all to pot, happy with no choke straight away. Hey ho, tinker tinker tinker

Fuel is probably pretty manky as it's been sat for 3 months. Slug of the good stuff and we'll be off again yaaaaay
