Carb problems on 1972 v8

Help, my V8 now starts without choke from cold and misfires. Have tried everything.
Could the internal choke gadget stick open when choke pushed back in. Any suggestions would be
appreciated . Chris

If these are HIF6 carbs then if the seals fail on the choke barrels then it's as though they are running on full choke all the time.

wasn't aware there are internal choke gadgets? and I have a V8 . mine has been paying up since trying to put back on road after covid storage. currently not happy running when cold. lacks power .stumbles and misfires back through carb ( and exhaust) though fuel coming back through carb is just fuel 'mist' sort of spitting. have both carbs refurbished 4 year ago. ..anyway stripped . no fault found .cleaned rebuilt and changed jets in both carbs as I had spares ( new) reset with needle and jet measuring device ( friends came in handy for tools) tried balancing with a carb balancing device.. checked fuel pump ( electric) OK. so tried blowing airline through return pipe with tank cap 'open' all we got was fuel pump out form supply line to carb with each press of airline pressure. next stage is to check dizzy .though this too was replaced for a full new full electronic a few year back (approx 700 miles ) short of setting fire to car..we are running out of ideas to get it running as it was when stored over year ago. fuel filter is clean too. so weekends chores will be check dizzy out .cap.rotor arm. ( plugs and leads also replaced few years ago and mileage on all is less than 900 miles .car proving extremely unreliable since first ownership ) Did manage a run to a car meet at Kelsey Mill ( east anglia) and back with just a couple of issues .suspected fuel starvation hence checking out carbs. guy assisting me is well versed in carbs ( motor bikes especially) and rechecked many things .. eg piston dropping onto bridge easily . throttle linkage set up etc. just wondering anybody had this sort of problem ? I fit was just low power and 'stumbling' then probably just a fuelling issue. misfire and fuel sitting back in carbs and exhaust with 'odd' misfire /ignition. seem to be pointing to electric was well. if no faults found ..and why would they be with such new stuff a pleads .plugs. dizzy and coil etc we are thinking pot putting the original dizzy back on with points!

I will be fitting new gaskets and seals to my carbs on Monday. Will post
the results. Am sure my chokes are permanently on due to collapsed “0”
rings. Wish me luck.CH

I've just made the aquaintance of this chap:

Andrew Turner

It turns out my A60 has a very worn carb. Apparently it's a very early HS6 with brass parts from an H6. Steve Turner (no relation) put me onto them, they have a good reputation in the Morris world though Andrew himself is a Triumph man. Around £150 for a complete rebuild which is a fair bit cheaper than Burlens with a faster turnaround period too. So one for your little black books.

Is there a way to distinguish between choke Oring problem, and an electric pump overpowering the float needles? Starts promptly cold (< 20C), no choke, then starts billowing sooty fumes after a minute or so, runs ragged. Sooted plugs. Recent Huco 133010 fitted in engine bay - spec pressure is only 2.1psi.
thanks

Sounds very much the trait of the former. An oversupply of fuel will be compensated by both the spill return and the chamber overflow pipes directing excess onto the ground. That isn't going to change the air-fuel ratio in the way that you describe. So my money is on a set of nice new 'O' rings correcting the problem John.

Ron.

Thanks for confirming the next step. Curiously I would have thought that only one carb would do it, but all the plugs were sooty, wet. Can you advise which CSK kit is relevant for the AUD623 carbs ? I have seen 2 (58 and 87?) listed by different sellers as being for a pair of HIF6s. An as somebody pointed out the jets are handed, so in a twin kit there should be a LH and RH?

On closer inspection the choke fitting on the RH carb is distinctly wet, so that confirms that one has an issue. Only issue is, how far do I go with a rebuild - just seals etc, or the full bottle - shafts, butterflys etc?

JP,
The amount of work involved is the same, as you need to strip it back to its bare bones and remove the throttle spindle in order to change all of the seals.
With hindsight, I would have ordered the rebuild kit over the service kit when I did mine, but luckily my spindle and discs were fine.

All back together. Spindles were pretty good, RH choke was Ok, but LH was very loose, wet, messy. Previous work obvious - seals under cap on choke spindles were Orings that didnt seal anything. No diagram in WSM of where the retuen springs connect, just text about pulling spring end into place with a wire hook. I think they are OK, seem to return fine. Back on the car, would have been in big trouble with the lower rear nuts without the bent ring spanners. Busted the plastic ball joint end on the interconnecting rod, so now hanging out for a replacement.
