Getting to know my boot

Hi everybody,

Kim the novice here again. This is not a threat to anybody by any means but an appeal to those more knowledgeable than myself.
I cannot open my boot. I did find a thread where one of our forum members had problems keeping the boot closed and I assume that mine has been over adjusted if there is such a thing, but before I can let the adjustment off I must first get access to the boot.

Does anyone know the alternative way to open the boot of my Rover P5B Coupe V8 3.5 litre?

On my Audi it involves getting past the back rear seats, pulling a rubber plug from the bodywork in the boot to expose a string and, you guessed it, you then pull the string and pop goes the boot. This happens to me so many times that I have now extended the string so that I can pull it from the front seat. I have a terrible habit of dropping my keys into the boot when loading without noticing it until the boot is close to closing and I value my fingers.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Best regards, Kim.

Right, I've never had a P5B, so can't help with a way to access boot.

Make sure the button is unlocked, yep I know - but........

Try putting pressure downward on the boot whilst operating the button.
Try putting pressure inward on the lid near the handle whilst operating the button.
Try to lift the lid whilst operating the button - seal might have stuck in the hot weather.
Ask an assistant to violently shake the car by the overiders whilst operating the button.
Try jacking up a rear corner quite high.
If you cannot access the boot internally you will have to think of more of the above.

/\/\/\ all of the above plus try giving the area around the handle a few thumps with your fist or ball of the hand while keeping upward pressure on handle. Unfortunately there's no access from the cabin into the boot, the tank's in the way and the boot floor is a solid panel (hopefully). After that you might have to get a bit medieval on it.

Thank you both.
I like the idea of getting a bit medieval on it, I might start there for the fun of it, though I may need a patch welded and a repaint at the end of this.

Best regards, Kim.

For the benefit of anybody looking at this thread to learn a method of accessing the boot I now quote a gentleman called Steve whose entry I have found on another forum. Steve owned a P5B for 25 years and he has left a few tips for the benefit of those of us following on....

When there is a problem such as mine when the boot will not open with the normal operation of the lock, you can gain limited access to the boot by removing the spare wheel and its support which should reveal a rubber bung in the base of the boot. It may take a little effort but you can push the bung into the boot giving you limited access to the lock mechanism allowing you to free the catch with some determined effort and the use of your third eye to undo the screws. I suggest you study your manual to understand the mechanism and decide on your best approach.

Good luck, Kim.

Thank you very much Steve should you read this entry, Kim.
