Hello Rover lovers,
I don't own a Rover pertinent to this forum unfortunately. Maybe a P5 or 6 in the future. I'm here as I help a friend with her P4 occasionally and I'm stuck on an overdrive question (I'll ask in the right section in due course). I have driven her P4 and it is lovely and having done a few small jobs on it I do have a bit of a soft spot for it but I have far too many cars already, no room and no money, sadly. I am mechanically minded, do all my own maintenance and willing to help others if I can. I'm located in Herefordshire. That's about it really. I wish you all many happy miles Rovering!
All the best,
Graham

Welcome from another Herefordian . Whats the problem, P4's have an interesting wiring arrangement for the O/Drive

The only odd wiring I recall was you needed to be in 4th gear for the Odrive relay to work, but this was not installed in my P4. The solenoid was a little unusual in that it had Pick and Hold windings , with Hold using much less current than Pick. Did Melb-Syd (550Mi) once in the 60s in my P4, never passed by another car. 1950 originally, P3 gearbox with Odrive, floor change, 90 engine and grille, P5 front drums -twin trailing shoes..

Hi, Yes ISTR there are switches on the throttle linkage about full throttle. Some thing to do with not being able to engage at full throttle or disengage at full throttle as a sort of kick down? It's a while ago since I've had one. Can you remind me roverp480?

Colin

There were two micro switches on the throttle linkage which meant , if I remember correctly, you could only operate the overdrive at part throttle , not full or closed. This allowed jerk free operation (Very Rover) .The was another switch under the throttle pedal which allowed a sort of Kick down, allowing one to go to full throttle and automatically drop out of overdrive for max acceleration

I usually feathered the throttle a touch as I engaged the OD - smooth as could be, like a good modern auto.

Thanks for the warm welcome all. Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I think I've worked out most of the issues I had (eg no relay earth tag on the cct diagram, it seems the relay is earthed through the can) but still have a couple of queries.
Are there some other earths missing off the diagram?
The column switch seems to be a 2 position switch. The cct diagram shows it hovering between the 2 poles. It is just 2 positions isn't it?
Are C1, C2 and C4 the contacts and W1 and W2 the windings (coils). Are there 2 coils in the relay? (I'm aware there are 2 coils in the solenoid).
If I'm missing something obvious, don't hesitate to let me know! :)
Thanks,

O/D switch has two positions . Only one coil in the relay but it seems to have a resister in it as well and C numbers are the contacts and W the windings. Innards of a 6RA relay shown , although I cannot find a relay with a double contact for C4
