More Sparky's winter work

Congratulations on the MOT Richard. It was good to meet you at Coughton and see Sparky. Of course, if you're fitting a new windscreen, don't forget to use the butyl-whotsit sealant stuff :D.

After playing with various jets and control rods in the Weber, I decided to ensure that the timing marks were correct. I have heard that they can be out by quite a margin, so before tuning the car in earnest, and spending money on rolling roads etc, I thought it prudent to check them.

I made up a piston stop from an old spark plug and some 8mm studding.

Then after removing a load of stuff to gain access

I turned the engine by hand until it stopped. Then turned it the other way until it stopped again

It stopped at 13 degrees BTDC and 21 degrees ATDC. This is not good news as I had the timing set at 8 BTDC, which in fact, given the misalignment of timing marks, was actually 4 BTDC. ( True TDC was at 4 ATDC on the pulley)

You can however adjust the timing pointer but only so much. It now stops at 16 BTDC and 18 ATDC. So true TDC is at 1 degree ATDC on the pulley. I can live with that as long as I remember :?

I popped out for a short test drive and did 74 miles :D you know how it is.

Tickover is now 14, cruise is around 14.5 to 15, PT acceleration is 13 but WOT is still a way out at 10.

Will be playing with the carb for a while yet I reckon.

Will be interested to see what rods, springs and jets you end up with after a rolling road tune also the overall hp and torque.
In as much as the timing pulley maybe out of wack calibration wise I tend to time by engine response and not really look at what the strobe is telling me as performance is your goal not a random timing mark.
