Random noise from a valve

Hallo to all.
Since a couple of weeks ago I’m experiencing in my 2200 TC a random noise coming from a valve of the engine.
Sometimes, no matter if the engine is cold or hot, at the engine start the noise starts as well, later after a random time it disappears. The noise never appear when the engine is already running.
I left the P6 to the mechanic, he supposed that a valve did not close perfectly cause moisture or whatever, so the noise could come from the camshaft beating the valve. He opened the rocker cover and checked the valves positioning respect the camshaft, everything looks fine, the cylinders compression ratio is fine as well, so the mechanic does not know how to behave ( the P6 refuse to make noise when the mechanic is near the car).
If someone had experienced the same phenomenon, I’ll be glad to listen how this has be overcome.

HI ALBERTO, ITS HARD TO DIAGNOSE WITHOUT HEARING IT, IS IT A METALLIC KNOCKING/RATTLE, IF YOU SEE HOW LONG IT TAKES FOR THE OIL PRESSURE DIAL TO WORK, AND SEE IF THE PRESSURE GOES UP, WHEN THE NOISE STOPS, I WOULD SUSPECT A LAZY OIL PUMP, TRY AN OIL FILTER AND OIL CHANGE, USE A GOOD OLD 20/50 CLASSIC GTX OIL IF YOU CAN GET IT. IT COULD ALSO BE A SLOPPY TIMING CHAIN!! ITS A PROCESS OF ELIMINATION, UNLESS YOU CAN FIND A GOOD MECHANIC THAT LOVES AND KNOWS CLASSIC CARS!! GOOD LUCK!! :D

Thanks so much.
I'm collecting all the suggestions and I'll submit to my mechanic that is indeed a classic car lover.
I'm right in the middle of a rally season and many Alfa Romeo's and Lancia's enthusiasts will be pleased to have not my P6 around in the next rallies cause my P6 grabs often cups at these events!

After a full inspection of the valves and camshaft, it has been found that the random noise come from the lower chain tensioner.
In the meanwhile I bought a huge set of valve shims, valve collars and other ancillary spares.
Anyway I think to have been lucky because I had no engine damages.
The problem is over.

Hi
I got shims from Mr. Steve Walker " S&G WALKER"
This gentleman, despite the " closing down sale " still have lots of interesting NOS P6 parts, as the complete set of valve shims composed by 53 different pieces!!
Alberto.

I was at Steves a few weeks back. He's got a lot of stuff left which I've found to my cost over the past year or 2 of the closing sale. :D I'll ask him. Thanks Alberto.

??? when "is he" closing down? its a very long sale!! as long as the prices are good, it can go on ,and on,and on,and on, :p

Yes, Mr. Walker is a true Gentleman , a competent and
honest supplier.
He has got a lot of patience listen to me at the phone cause my broken English ( I'm from Italy ).
However, Mr Walker does not have in stock any specific part for LHD P6, this is a nightmare for us Italian P6 enthusiasts, if for example we broke a front lamp or the steering box, we do not know where to buy a new one for LHD.
Do you know if there is any British supplier that have on stock parts for LHD P6 ?
Alberto.

The sale is on until the stock is gone I think. There's still a fair bit.
Alberto, you'd have to contact the other suppliers to find the availability of LHD parts. They're in the club magazine or you could try the Rover sports register magazine as well for potential suppliers.

hi,
i have LHD front lamps ( second hand ) and also some steering parts.
a closing down sale will take as long as it takes to sell all the stock, it's as easy as that. if you do not buy it then it will take longer to sell, if you all went mad and bought from him he would have already shut down, but he has a hell of a supply of parts.
