I am looking at JR Wadhams P6 ignition spares and see two sets of parts, one for pre '72, one for after. Why? What happened in 1972?

Can anyone date my engine, 48112319D.

But more to the point, which distributor cap should I fit - I have RR (blue) since that is what Halfords sell but I know it differs slighty from P6 (black) - anyone know the difference? And is it a bad idea to use RR cap on P6 dizzy?

Here is the parts list, pre and post 72.

right; to put you out of your misery, info. I have is the distributor and points changed; all other ignition parts are the same.

I wonder if that expains why a couple of people have been having trouble with points, elsewhere on the forum ?

If I remember rightly, early points were a tiny little set, then at the time of the change you mention they increased in size, but also came in two different types, either with or without a locating pin on the bottom to locate the vacuum advance.
The only way to know which was fitted was distributor number, so I always stocked the ones with the pin and if the pin wasn't required I just cut it off.
On the subject of points, I never fitted anything other than genuine Lucas items and never had any trouble, other makes particularly the ones mentioned previously were never up to the job.If I couldn't get genuine Lucas now I'd fit electronic(probably a good idea anyway)

Don't even go there with points!!!!! I fitted 2 sets to my V8, and got a misifire that occured after about 40 miles of driving!!! An intermotor set that I bought were that badly made they wouldn't even fit ??? Just to add insult to injury, the car is now running fine on a manky, badly burnt set ???

I don't regret dumping the points - try Pertronix which fits inside the distributor so keeps the original look. Took a little time to solder in a live feed and bypass the resistor wire but well worth it in my opinion.
They charge US cost but its sent from UK warehouse so about 50% saving on Uk price and quick delivery in just a few days - solved my problem with occasional flat spots and no more cutting out on junctions.

Yeah, next time around I'm going to dump the points, and go electronic. I have to admit, I hadn't heard of the pertronix system. I had a look on the Aldon website the other day, and apparently one of their ignitor systems works fine with the ballast resistor ignition system :)

Talking of intermotor, my friend runs the big Vauxhall FD/FE Victors and Ventoras. He reckons that they run absolutely crap with the intermotor points!!!!!!! ???
