Thanks old bloke for the fantastic photos. Whilst I doubt I could justify another P6, I do have 2 MGBs. A rubber bumper GT that I use every day and a mark 1 Roadster that is awaiting paintwork. I agree, they make all great stablemates.

Hi I've just tested again and the sound isn't present with the engine cold even in drive. It only manifests itself after a run with a hot engine. Andy

Thank you Vern. I still can't see any sign of a pointer, either past or present. I've timed the engine using a vacuum gauge and good, old fashioned trial and error. After further adjustments to carburettor, the car car is running really well so I think I can now close this thread. Andy
