A rare Car in Oz, now for sale

If you are looking for a particularly rare P6, and don't mind importing it from Australia, then here is something rather special http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rover-1970-P6-P6B-Estate-3500-V8-Series-1-Estoura-Station-Wagon-rust-repair-done-/172076808602?hash=item281093b99a:g:7NkAAOSw42JWERPu I...

    35D8 vacuum advance canister

I found the D.D. most unhelpful when I asked about a replacement unit. He quoted for a change-over and when I explained that change-over from Australia was not practical, and how much without change over, the e-mail back was very simple "Add 100 pounds" I hunted around and found 'British Vacuum...

    Lady owners

It was my wife who decided that she liked the grey 1959 90 that we looked at. She bought it, and I have the pleasure of driving and maintaining the car. We have done some fairly extended trips in it too, but my wife does not drive it at all.

    The washing machine test.

Wife and I went to an auction in the Model A Ford that we had at the time. Bought two T.V. sets, twin tub washing machine and some sundries. The car was a two-door (Tudor) model. I unbolted the passenger bucket seat. Wife sat on the rear seat, cuddled to one t.v. and the removed front seat, the...

Front brakes/ flexable hoses Jacking up/axle stand placement

I have successfully lifted the car by jacking under the middle of the front cross member. Once high enough, then insert suitable lengths of strong round steel into the side jacking points- I used off cuts of galvanised water pipe, and support the car with your stands under those.

    Help needed!

As the car has sat for some time, it might be that there is no oil pressure. The 'upside-down' oil filter should be one with a non-drain valve, but that might be faulty and the oil has run out of it, and maybe the pump can't re-build pressure. Dane.

    Pinking/Fuel Additive

Hello Mark. The engine is OHV, The head is aluminium alloy, therefore the valves have to have hardened seats! In your situation, I would be adjusting the vernier adjuster on the distributor until the pinking goes away. Dane.

    new front disc suppliers

Sorry ewokracing, he used to have them. All I can suggest is finding useable second-hand ones. I have two old car bodies that might have suitable discs. I could measure them for you if you can send the specifications.

    Lord Montagu dies

R.I.P. Both Lord Montagu and Michael Sedgwick together did so much for the historic car movement. They both leave a wonderful legacy that we can all benefit from.

    Towing with the P6

I have trailered a 2000 automatic with a 3500 automatic. Took the cars about 60 miles like that for some repair work on the 2000 auto.

    new here :)

How about a 2000 fitted with turbocharger? I have one that seems to have been a rally car in the past. Where in Oz are you? The car is in South Gippsland, and available for a very low price.

Thanks, Rovering. I feel a lot more comfortable about tackling the job now.

    Side Plate Bolts

I need to replace the side plates on the engine, and I see that there are a couple of threads about that here, however my question is- Are the bolts into 'blind' holes, or do they go through into the water jacket itself? I have worked on another make of engine with side plates and the bolt...

    advance vacuum wanted

It is unlikely that a second-hand unit will be in good condition. I have had very good service, and reasonable prices from the American company, 'British Vacuum Units'. Theirs are truly new units, not reconditioned or remanufactured ones. They went to a lot of trouble to make sure that the...

    vacuum advance

Best source for Vac units is British Vacuum Units in the USA. Excellent service and good prices. I had problems with sourcing one for my 1950 P4, and the chap was most helpful, eventually making exactly the right one. They are all brand new units, not refurbished ones that other suppliers sell...

    A tribute to p6's

Coop, I do understand your reasoning, as you have only had the car a short time, and perhaps not long enough to yet know all of its idiosyncrasies, so you probably did the wises thing. As far as our P4 was concerned, it really needed a new engine before the trip, but knowing the car, I was...

    A tribute to p6's

As a comparison, from our home to Perth is a bit further than London to Moscow. Knowing your vehicle and understanding its behaviour should give an owner the confidence to drive his car certain distances. The P4 for the Alice trip had a very well worn engine, and in fact when we got home, the...

    A tribute to p6's

I find it a little amusing that 400 or 280 miles is a long trip. Last year my wife and I drove from near Melbourne to Perth and back in our 1982 SD1. The year before we drove to Alice Springs and back in our 1959 P4 90. We live about 100 miles South East of Melbourne in Victoria. They were trips...

    Window Washer

Repco have a very effective window washer liquid at IIRC about $2 per 250ml bottle. I not only use it in my washer bottles, but have used it to clean very dirty glass. Smoke stained picture frame glass comes up really well and perfectly clean, but I did use it neat for that job.

    "Running In"-labels?

It was not just for cars with rebuilt engines. New car buyers were cautioned to drive carefully and within certain limits during the 'running in' period. Have a look at original driver's handbooks for cars prior to the 1970's.

    WHY A VIKING SHIP?

The Rover name dates back from when John Kemp Starley produced a tricycle upon which he believed the owner could 'rove' anywhere. Shortly afterwards JKS developed the 'safety' bicycle- i.e. chain drive to the rear wheels, and both wheels approx. the same size. The name was so appropriate that...
