Car now starts but floods - where next?

Sod it! It's going to the mechanics, I give up! There's not really any reason why it shouldn't be at least running so I've come to the conclusion that whatever it is, if I haven't found it yet I'm not going to! I reset the timing again today as it wasn't me that timed it last time, still...

Car now starts but floods - where next?

Incredibly helpful post, thank you. I will get to that as soon as I can, hopefully will be able to do it tonight or one evening this week and won't have to wait til the weekend. Thanks again for the photos etc, they'll be a huge help.

Car now starts but floods - where next?

Will try this tomorrow night hopefully as long as I can get a pair of hands. Aha! I knew I'd heard 2.5 turns from something, somewhere! Shame I decided to fabricate the rest of it. Having trouble picturing this - because I took the carbs apart to replace the float needles/seats, a lot of...

Car now starts but floods - where next?

Update! The car has now run, absolutely horribly, for a total of about one minute. So I'll call that progress. Carbs with their new float needles/seats are on. What I said in the above post about 2.5 turns from all the way in was complete cobblers obviously and I've misread something, as it...

Car now starts but floods - where next?

Right... So I got the carbs off, stripped them down and cleaned them out, and I have replaced the float needles and float needle valve seat things. Both sets of needles and seats were worn, so maybe this is it. All I have done so far in terms of setup is set both of the mixture screws to 2.5...

Car now starts but floods - where next?

I'll fetch a pic over the weekend.had carbs off tonight, stripped them down part of the way. Float is intact in the one I've done, not too horrific in there but the float needle is quite scored. I've ordered up a pair of float needle kits and some new gaskets. I'm going to take them to work and...

Car now starts but floods - where next?

It's actually the ignition module that's catching on the stay bar. The vac advance is in the same position, close to a water pipe, on your left looking into the bay from the front. The ignition module and the connector are what's in the way. Re: moving it around - am I correct in thinking...

Car now starts but floods - where next?

I mean more that it's flooding itself when you try to start still. And yeah I am inclined to agree about the bar. A bit of a pickle because he had the same problem I did, that it wasn't possible to rotate the dizzy enough with the bar there. I'd hope that there was some way to get it in time...

Car now starts but floods - where next?

Huco pump fitted and working. Now need a real good tidy up of wiring and fuel pipes as I know the ignition system works. To time the distributor correctly the mechanic removed the left hand (looking out from the cabin) stabiliser bar that attaches next to the distributor. I spoke to him tonight...

Car now starts but floods - where next?

You're right, it is easy. The information was filtered through my mother who unfortunately does have a flair for the dramatic and a tendency to add her own spin to any information she passes on! Dad spoke to him also and was much more positive so we'll go with that!

Car now starts but floods - where next?

I'll stick the pump on then inspect the floats and the rest of the carbs, see where it takes me. If the carbs look Ok inside, I will just reset them to standard at first. Thanks for advice all, I'll work my way down that list.

Car now starts but floods - where next?

I've ordered up a low pressure huco pump after searching on here to confirm which one, so will get that fitted as soon as I can. Even if it's what's overwhelming the carbs they'll still be well out of tune. I guess it's a matter of finding out if it's just the floats, or a proper rebuild. There...

Car now starts but floods - where next?

I wasn't available when the gent was round but he spoke to my dad - who will be around later this evening and I'll be grilling him. All I can glean so far is that it was running very badly but the carbs were very poorly set up and set up differently to each other - and that he said carb...

Car now starts but floods - where next?

Honestly because the car's just turning into a bit of a nightmare and this minute it's really getting to me. Without wanting to sound like an idiot.. how?

Car now starts but floods - where next?

I wrote a really long post out but scrapped it for this one which will be as to the point as I can be. Following on from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=21561&start=0 I had a classic-sympathetic mechanic around today for a couple of hours and the news isn't great. He sorted the timing for me...

V8 - lumenition to powerspark distributor wiring help please

I moved them anti-clockwise one position when I tried to move the rotor - reckon I should go clockwise once and then once again? And yeah cold is the word :(

V8 - lumenition to powerspark distributor wiring help please

Took all the plugs out, took all the leads off, labelled them all up to be sure. Found TDC with a stick down the plug hole and put it all back together. It really wants to fire up, it's definitely trying, but it feels like we can't rotate the distributor enough to get it to where it wants to...

V8 - lumenition to powerspark distributor wiring help please

I moved them all around by 180º and no change - moved them round one more and still no change. Do I just keep moving them around by one until something happens?

V8 - lumenition to powerspark distributor wiring help please

I think I now understand about 180 degrees out - I didn't realise how it could be but now I think I understand better - the distributor turns once for every two times the crank turns, is that right? Either way I will do that first thing tomorrow. Is the correct way to do this to leave the cap...

V8 - lumenition to powerspark distributor wiring help please

To the best of my knowledge and abilities which is not much, yes. I turned the engine so that the TDC marker was where the white arrow marker is. Then I fiddled with the oil pump spindle until the distributor when completely home was oriented so the rotor arm was pointing at where my manual...

V8 - lumenition to powerspark distributor wiring help please

Engine now has two earth straps, a new one in the original location (rubbed down to metal at both connections), and one from a manifold bolt to where the coil earths. Battery negative strap is new. Alternator for this test was completely unplugged. Starter motor connections seem good, the...
