    Third gear doesn’t engage

It does make sense, just didn’t understand correctly the first time ;)

    Third gear doesn’t engage

I will try that, next time. But will it shift to 3rd then? I thought the lever down would ’hold it’ in 2nd (intermediate) and would never get to the highest. To be honest, not sure what the exact mechanical condition is. I’ve bought it without a lot of info about the history.

    Third gear doesn’t engage

‘Tonys’, my savior again :) I didn’t know that pulling away gently would skip first gear. I thought I’d spare the old lady and drive like an elderly gentleman, but next time I will put the pedal to the metal and swirf of with screaming tyres and count the gear changes! Also, I will check the...

    Third gear doesn’t engage

… first thread here?! Anyway, I have a problem with the automatic on my P5 3 ltr Mk 2 (1964) :( Third gear doesn’t seem to engage. I thought it might have to do with the ’auto gear hold control’, but I’ve tried the upward and downward position at 80 km per hour and it doesn’t make a difference...

    Lever on steering column

And thanks again! Maybe I should read the ins and outs in my P5 book first, before I pose questions. The other thing has to do with me being from Holland, I guess. TAFKAP I know (and Away From Keyboard), but that's it ;)

    Lever on steering column

What a source of knowledge, over here. Thanks for all your answers - and it didn't seem to be a very stupid question after all ;) Next time I get her out, I will try and test things! (And now I'm going on the internet and look up 'DG' and 'IIRC' ...)

    Lever on steering column

Actually, I don't see it in my documentation either - and is to say: my work shop manual doesn't mention the controls on the steering column at all, and the parts catalogue shows only a lever on one side. I will try and make a photo of the levers, for clarification.

    Lever on steering column

Yes indeed, it's LHD! Sorry for not mentioning that ;) And thanks for your answer - but it leaves me with a new question: what does the 'auto gear hold control' do? (And your mentioning of differences between LHD and RHD eliminates my confusion that I had after reading the manual!)

    Lever on steering column

Hi, I couldn't feel more stupid, but I can't seem to track down the function of the smaller lever on the right side of the steering column. On the left, I have the indicator lever and the headlamp lever - it is a P5 3 Ltr Auto from 1964. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks! Bram

    Towing a P6

Thanks for al the ideas. I’ve used the front cross member, went very well. And now I’m off to the other part of the forum: I’ve traded my P6 2200 TC (which had problems with engine and gearbox) for a P5 3000 Some extra steps further back in the past! (1968 vs 1964) Bram

    Towing a P6

Hi, Maybe a silly question, but what is the best way to attach a towing rope to a P6? I have to get it onto an ambulance with the use of a winch, since it doesn’t drive. And I don’t see an obvious attachment point. Thanks! Bram

What pushrod is this?! And also: why won't it shift into gear?

Thank you so much! I do have the Haynes Owner Workshop Manual, with the same pic inside. I will try and have a good look at it, soon. Might be a while thought, because of lack of time. When I know more, I’ll come back with the results!

Wow, I’m going to have to study on this one! Thanks for your elaborate answer

What pushrod is this?! And also: why won't it shift into gear?

Hi Vern, the car is in neutral, wheels run free. And the car is a series I (1968, RHD, once imported from GB ).

What pushrod is this?! And also: why won't it shift into gear?

That’s an interesting thought! No difference in speed of rotating parts, so coupling the box to the engine should not be a problem. Do I say that correct? Indeed, you can normally engage the gears with the engine at a standstill without using the clutch. So my problems are of a different order...

What pushrod is this?! And also: why won't it shift into gear?

Maybe I describe things not clearly enough; the lever does move (a bit, and from side to side (= neutral)) but it won’t go into gear. So the lever itself is not stuck or anything.

What pushrod is this?! And also: why won't it shift into gear?

Sounds plausible! Although the gear lever did move at some point in the past - but with the new cylinders in place, it doesn’t. So I‘m afraid I have to look for the cause in my own actions… (By the way, remarkable that it somewhat did work in the past, since both cylinders were on the inside...

What pushrod is this?! And also: why won't it shift into gear?

The master cyl in the pic is the old one, it was too far gone on the inside. I have installed a new one and used - as is expected - the old pushrod with the thread at the end. A new slave cyl is also installed, and I have bled the circuit. The pedal feels quite normal: with first a little bit of...

Thanks for the link, I will follow instructies tomorrow!

What pushrod is this?! And also: why won't it shift into gear?

No, I know. But it was a reaction to the suggestion made above to get a possibly frozen plate loosened. Later on, I will get my partner in the car and have her engage the pedal, while I'm under the car to see whether the slave cylinder moves the lever in the box noticeably sufficient (but what...

What pushrod is this?! And also: why won't it shift into gear?

Thanks for your response. Not sure what a 'pedal trunnion' is, I'm still working on my English Rover vocabulary ;-) but I don't think I've dismantled anything at the pedal. It really annoys me, because it gives me the idea that I just forgot to reinstall something ... And I can't find this...

What pushrod is this?! And also: why won't it shift into gear?

Silly, I know. I've replaced my clutch cylinder with a new one, quite some time ago. And now I can't remember what it looked like. I mean: I found the old stuff that came out, but I can't figure out what the pushrod shown on the pic was for. It sure isn't the one going to the pedal, so what is...

Please listen to this: sound of not starting

Maybe it’s good to mention that the car has been standing for about 15 years in a collection. Just before I bought it, the vendor succeeded in getting it to run. But he couldn’t drive it on the road, because the brakes were faulty. So a lot of things will need some attention. Maybe for instance...

Please listen to this: sound of not starting

Thank for the opinions and advice mentioned above! I still haven’t tried anything yet, but will soon. First check plugs and then fuel. One other thing, by the way: the day before the vid, I tried starting and saw some fuel splashing, somewhere in the area of the carbs, in the inner side, to the...
