2" SU's on V8

Im fitting a 3.9 into my p6 instead of the 3.5. Cant really see any problem there. I aquired a pair of 2" SU's from a jag. 2 problems: when fitting in a V formation the linkages dont meet on the same side! Any ideas? Home made linkage perhaps. Secondly, theyre too tall! The bonnet will not close!!
Can anybody tell me the best way to get engine/gearbox in? Gearbox in situ first (auto), or engine first? I have limited height in my garage therefore both together might not be possible. I need to tidy engine bay a bit first though.

Personally I'd fit the gearbox to the engine on the floor and then fit it all as one lump. If you can't do that then I'd fit the engine first, (preferrably with the bellhousing and converter fitted to it) and then assemble the gearbox to it from underneath.

Last resort would be to fit the gearbox to the car, but holding the front end up will be awkward, and then fit the engine to it, but the converter/bellhousing must be fitted to the box to do it this way, and it's the most PITA way of doing it.

From my point of view there's no contest, fit it all as one lump.

If the height problem is only marginal you might get away with using early S1 engine mounts (common with the P5) which give a slightly lower installation height.

A bigger problem is that you really ought to open out the inlet tracts somewhat.

Best stick with the injection!

Hello Andrew,

A Pair of 1.75" HIF6 carburettors will work more than satisfactorily with a 3.9 litre engine, expecially given as you are running an automatic transmission. The only real benefit to be had of running 2" carburettors assuming that you cut a hole in the bonnet in order to fit them will be above 4000rpm or so.

Ron.
