2000 TC - Engine Vibration

I have a some excessive engine vibration in my 1971 Rover 2000 TC. It has been suggested that the engine mountings could have collapsed. Being a new-comer to Rovers and in particular to my car, firstly, I don't quite know what the chap meant by collapsed, and secondly how do I check if they have?

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks

Andrew.

have you checked the waterpump bearings?,mine were that shot i could feel the vibration through the steering wheel, after about ten miles my fingertips would go numb, i had about 3mm play

I would think if it is vibrating enough to be felt in the car you should almost be able to see it under the bonnet. leave the engine running and look at the ends of the two mounting arms coming from the middle of the engine to the inner wing. If you rev the engine from under the bonnet any movement should be visible. Alternatively use a bar/length of wood and try and pry the engine one way or another, again any movement should be visible. The rubber mount is sandwiched between two large metal washer type flanges and if that rubber is missing I think you will notice. Compare 1 side to the other for reference. You may also want to check for anything rubbing against the body, exhausts are a favourite.
