2200 TC - Which radiator

Hi,

When I converted from 2200SC to 2200TC, I kept my old radiator. Should I really be using a radiator with an oil cooler? In fact, is the oil cooler a seperate entity altogether on these cars?

I am overheating in traffic, so was going to get my rad re-cored (it's in a bit of a state), but I wondered if this would be worthwhile if there was any chance that a lack of an oil cooler were contributing to my problems.

Thanks in advance for any input - John

Yes the oil cooler is separate and I guess they added it for reason. Can't recall if the 2000TC has one or not.

The other point I forget to raise was that I don't even know where the oil out and return lines would connect to the block. Anyway, I like the replies thus far and can just go ahead and get my existing radiator rebuilt next week.

Thanks guys.

The function of the oil cooler is to remove excess heat from the oil ,prolonging the life of the engine. This was obviously added to compensate for the increased performance,( and subsequent increased heat) of the TC.
Now it is your choice, depending on how you intend to drive the car.
Since I notice most racers have oil coolers, I have always thought this must be a good thing.

According to the parts manual for the 2000TC , the oil cooler was an optional extra - comprising a U shaped finned unit which was separate to the radiator - this was connected using two long hoses - one to the block and one to the oil pump housing - replacing one of the existing two steel reinforced hoses.
My radiator also has the cooler at the bottom but I always assumed, probably mistakenly, that this was for Auto gearbox oil cooling, my car is a manual.
If you feel you need an oil cooler then something like the kenlowe units should suit with one of their adapters fitting under the oil filter and allowing the use of standard hoses & connectors. (they also do adaptors with built in thermostats)
If you are racing, towing or blasting down motorways then it would probably be worthwhile - otherwise I would rather spend the money on petrol and clock up some miles.

The radiators with the integral oil cooler are for the cars with automatic transmission. The oil-lines for it come from the auto 'box. My P5B & P6B both have this system as must all the auto's. I suppose you could use it for the engine if you have a manual 'box though I suspect you'd be getting into sufficient/restricted oil-flow territory there & would have to use a purpose-built engine cooler though this isn't essential (SC or TC) as it was an optional item probably for hot countries, towing......etc. Whether the oil cooler is used or not should make no difference to the radiator, it will cool the engine as normal so you can use them in the manual cars too.

I guess this is another of those mysteries. My 68 2000TC Standard tranmission came with the integral oil cooler in the radiator as did the 65 2000 SC. This is here in the states.
I never did a survey onthe other half a dozen or so 2000's that have passed through my hands, and my body parts spare which was an automatic is missing its radiator. The lines are metal coated , feeding the engine oil in and out.
The original sales papers on the 68 show no options.
