Need to re furb manual box to keep car original . Is this a forlorn hope regarding scarcity of bits ie. bearings?

Front main bearings are relatively easy to source from normal bearing suppliers. The only supplier to have the correct rear bearing is J R Wadham. Laygear bearings don't tend to suffer problems, but should be reasonable easy to source if required. The laygear is the main difficulty as it's not available new, so you need to find good secondhand, the same goes for all the gears and the mainshaft really. I have some good used parts when you work out what you need. Avoid using new synchro cones, use good secondhand.

Why would you want to keep the original gearbox? It's known to be too weak to handle the V8's torque (my dad's 3500S certainly mangled its gearbox within 80,000 miles from new) and has no overdriven top for relaxed/economical cruising... and parts are becoming harder to come by (and will probably continue to become harder, as more P6s get broken for spares and the market for parts shrinks).

An original numbers matching shell within reason would be worth far more than a modified/upgraded vehicle, especially as the DVLA are beginning to start enforcing thier rules.

What rules are the DVLA enforcing?

I have a rebuilt (in 2008, with paperwork) 3500S 4-speed gearbox in the 3500S we're breaking at the moment. It is attached to a hell of a lively engine, so ideally it'll be going in a car complete, but we can split them. (PM me for more if interested).

Cheers
Nick
