5 cylinder engine

Back in the day I had a 1982 Mitsubishi Sigma 2.0 litre with balance shafts (Mitsubishi called it "Silent Shaft" technology) and a 1987 Tredia 1.6 litre with the same. Both were nice running engines, even by modern standards.

Yes, but all DS engines were notorius for NVH, even by 1960's standards.
I'm not really into them

I am!
I never wrote all that! :p
I don't mind the look and the ride/comfort. I'm just better at mechanical/ bodywork work than plumbing

Saab 2.3 4 pots have a balance shaft. Vauxhall did a 2.2 4cyl, not sure if they have balance shafts.

I guess back in the '60s most cars were RWD, and if you wanted a smoother less harsh engine, you fitted a straight 6. Straight 6s don't really work with transverse FWD setups, hence the need to develop smoother larger capacity 4cyl engines.

The 2.2 carlton engine i had in my silver manta didnt have balancer shafts... Had a 1.9 2 box exhaust on it so you'd probably not notice any vibration above that caused by the exhaust.

The difference between 2.0 and 2.2 is a fairly small percentage increase in engine capacity. Maybe this is a 'soft' limit in that somewhere just over 2 litres it starts to become a problem. Maybe you have to get to 3 litres before it's painful or something?
