Autobox clonk!

I've got a '75 V8 fitted with a BW65 box. My garage recently adjusted the shift cable to improve gear changes - it was changing up very late and couldn't be made to change by backing off the throttle. Since the adjustment it is much better in this respect, however I now get quite an alarming 'clonk' when coming to to rest as the 'box drops into first. This doesn't happen every time, but when it does its quite noticable to say the least! Any advice please? Thanks, Mike

Our V8 seems to hang on to the gears (longer than our P5B) but our semi-local Auto specialist took a drive & said that was normal with the P6's. The factory nipple on the kickdown cable is still in it's rightful place at the end of the outer sleeve so we'll leave alone. Both my P5B & the P6B (BW35 & 65) are a bit clonky changing gear up & down unless you are able to give them some power through the up-changes but I'm under the impression from buying guides that this is fairly standard.
I don't know how quiet your box was before the work but a bit of a clonk probably isn't much to worry about though I'm not an expert by any means.
I had a ride in a Silver Ghost once & that was clonky too so we're in good company.... :)

I was getting that clonk on a box when I swapped it over - adjusted the cable (the other way I guess!) and clonk has gone.
She still engages from rest with a bit of movment, tick over is fine, diff has been tightend in mounts, so I guess I might have to fiddle with cable a little more until I get a happy medium.
Better late change ups than clonk I think.
dont get any clonks when box moves its self up the gears.

After having a lot of 'umms and 'ahhs with my auto set-up since taking ownership I've had to put up with shunts and clunks galore.

The worst thing I had was a very loose diff mounting, engaging 'D' and especially 'R' from 'N' was almost of rabbit punch force to the kidneys.

I've had the idle checked, kickdown cable checked and also UJ's and finally the diff. Everything that has been done has been done, the fluid is ok, the box is still very good for its age. The only thing I did do was put some Forte gearbox conditioner in there which I've used in modern boxes and that has made a little difference too.

The 35 box is a naturally clunky box especially at low revs on upchanges. On the 'move' though, it's uber-smooth. If it does bother, a P6B will happily potter at low speeds in '2' even from stationary.

Many thanks for all your replies. I feel a bit better now and think I'll leave well alone! I've got an older P5B (BW35) with the D2/D1/L set-up, and even in D1 it's really smooth, just lucky with that one I guess.

If in slow-moving traffic I'll generally leave both cars in 2nd (P5B is later 1/2/D) as the constant up/down between 1st & 2nd is particularly annoying & as you say, they'll both start off in 2nd with no bother.
I think there's an element of luck whether you have a smooth 'box or not.

Think your right about "luck", guess when they were new they were all very much the same. Have a 2000 auto - smooth changes all the time, V8 I'm flogging seems to be quite smooth, the v8 keeping for now thumps a bit, but not nearly as bad as it was when I first got it, due to much tweaking - not that even after changing a duff gearbox, the better one was still doing it - a lot has clearly got to do with the installation - ie wear in drive train etc... :D
