Bend pushrods! :-(

Hello Preben,

Chris is spot on with his advise regarding changing your camshaft at the same time as doing the timing set, afterall in the long run he is trying to save you money. Naturally all the lifters will need to be changed at the same time when a camshaft is changed, otherwise the old lifters will destroy your new camshaft and you will have to do it all again a week later.

Regular oil changes are essential for gaining the longest life from a Rover V8, and these will have a direct bearing on how rapidly parts wear away. When you look into the rocker cover having unscrewed the oil filler cap, what colour do you see? Is it black and shiny or a lighter colour?

The biggest expense will come depending on whether you intend to pay a garage to do the work or if you do it yourself. The camshaft is the major point here,....if you do the work yourself and when it comes time to start the engine it does not run within the first few turns of the starter, then your new camshaft will be getting ruined.. This is applicable to all engines, new camshafts must be run in correctly and so the engine must start and run without idling for a good 20 minutes or so.

It is all a pain I know and a cost that you would rather not have, but these things have to be considered given the state of your car / engine,...bent pushrods...not a good start.

Ron.

You got a point, and i checked around a little, lubrication seems to be an issue on these engines. I even found a couple of budget priced kits on ebay for about £150 including everything i need (except pushrods), and considering how little the car is to be driven every year (maybe 2000 miles) it will do for me. Are there any stock cams that are slightly hotter than sto stock cam in my ´74?

Hello Preben. For a more aggresive cam try a 'fast road' cam, I think it is called No. 214, from Kent Cams. Still gives ample lazy low end grunt, comes on nicely after about 3500rpm, you'll need new needles in your SUs to suit the cam, or better yet a four-barrel carb like a Holley 390 on a manifold such as an Edlelbrock 'Performer', and a pair of exhaust headers (see 'Sparky's Winter Work' thread in Members Projects section). Made a pronounced difference to the feel (and rumpety-rump at tickover) of my P6, with 'MG block hugger' type 4into1 headers! Check out the V8 Owners Forum, loads of recipes there for improving the performance of your Rover V8, lots of knowledgeable chaps to provide help. http://www.v8forum.co.uk/forum/index.php

The topic of after market cams compared to standard could almost be worth a thread in itself, need owners of each cam to give a subjective and objective account of each of the cams as it compares to the standard plain Jane Rover origional cam, ii does it give a marked difference to the trouser feeling when accelerating from rest and what the shove is like at overtaking revs also how it has affected your fuel economy and of course the ever present smile factor. :D
