Black Wheels are on.

Hey,
I bought a second set of SD1 style wheels as came on my P6 the other week and finally got round to painting them and getting them fitted. I'm pretty happy with the results although the sanding/prep isn't quite as good as I'd like so i'll likely strip them back again at some point in the future and re-do. I wanted to keep the textured finish so didn't go too nuts on sanding them back. Considering the rest of the exterior is cosmetically still very much a work in progress I'm happy with the results.

The tyres on the old set had also seen better days so they have all been replaced with new 195/70/14s branded as Austyre which are apparently made by Dunlop.

To finish them off i bought new centre badges and gave the chrome caps a good clean.

Here's the results of before and after:

What do you think?

Hello Al,

I have never really been a fan of black wheels on a car, but having said that,..that doesn't look too bad.

The tyre size of 195/70 HR14 is actually too small in terms of the rolling diameter compared to the original tyre sizing. A much closer match to that size is 205/70. If you prefer 195s then 195/75 is much closer to the original mark.

Ron.

Thanks Ron,

I just replaced with the same size as was on the previous set of wheels i must admit. How do 205s go for width clearance around the guards?

Cheers,

Al

Hello Al,

My o/s rear tyre runs close to the inside of the 'D' pillar, more so than the n/s, but contact is not made. The fronts present no problems. Rover it appears was rather sloppy with base unit QA, so while mine is ok clearance wise another P6B may not be.

How much clearance do you already have between the 195 tyres and 'D' pillars?

Ron.

Well smart, I really like them  Are you going to keep the paintwork blue or change it to black ?

Si

Dont think it suits a blue car though??? It just looks like you forgot to put the hub caps back on!!!

I like it!

here's one of my cars with the same sort of style:

though I powdercoated the steel wheels:

which you can see didn't get right down into the deep crevice of the wheel, so painting wheels like you have is probably the better option.

Snap but with 205's on

Hankook 845 series Milage plus tyres

gaurd clearances on the rears are Ttttttttight!!! there may be a millimeter if I am lucky, I had to flatten down one gaurd edge, going around roundabouts shows up any problems a small crinkle appeared on the paint work where the tyre friction heated that area up (now resolved) but the tyre change is certainly worth it in terms of handling performance not to mention improved braking.

Just noticed the addtional line in your signature block :D very good. Is that an homage to The Court Jester with Danny Kaye by any chance?

ps I'm with Pilkie on the "forgotten to fit the hub caps look"

 spot on, had forgotten it till I was looking up allo allo videos to show a Chinese friend in China what good British humour was all about, funnily enough I discovered several complete episodes on a Chinese language site hosted from China.

They nicked the idea from The Court Jester with Danny Kaye.

I prefer your wheels silver, but I also like them Black! To complete the look methinks you ought to remove the overiders and paint the bumpers black too. Then paint the waist mouldings black, and perhaps some of the bright trim on the cabin - perhaps just the window frames, leaving the body mouldings bright? That would look very cool indeed, but definitely not to everybody's taste!

Chris

I like them, but I always like black wheels, Police poverty spec rim style, or with just small dog dish hubcaps, but I don't think that would suit a P6!
