brake master

hi all where is the best place to get a brake master as i think mine as failed brake pedal keeps going to the floor and got to pump it to get a hard pedal again

Nasty feeling that one... If it's your master I think most of the often-mentioned suppliers stock them, from £65 to £95 - and seals kits at £9(!). Refitting seals is not a hard job as long as the bore is usable. Messy bit is removing the cylinder itself, and then bleeding the system.

Hello Gareth,

If your master cylinder has been previously re sleeved in stainless steel, then all you will need will be the seal kit. Rover Classics or J R. Wadhams are but two businesses that can supply.

If by chance your master cylinder has not had such treatment, then you will need to find a business to undertake the re sleeving, and I would imagine that most brake places would be able to assist, either doing the work in house or sending it away. Either way you will still need to obtain the seal kit.

yea i dont know what to do puy a new 1 or rebuild it i think the way to go it buy a new 1 and least i know it brand new i rebuild master on my 2200 many years ago and 3 years later on it was going again so i am not sure what to do. are the masters all the same on the different models

If you buy a new master cylinder, then the bore being made from normal steel will corrode in due course, which in my mind is a waste of money.

A new seal kit will cost less than 5 Pounds. If your existing master cylinder has not been resleeved in stainless steel, then it would be money well spent having it treated so. Bore corrosion is then a thing of the past, and seal kits should last at least 10 years and 100,000 miles when fitted into such a cylinder.

Have you made certain Gareth that the problem is indeed the master cylinder? Feel the pushrod that extends from the brake pedal through the fire wall into the rear of the master cylinder. Can you feel brake fluid?

Ron.

Matmore Motor Spares in Spalding, Lincs. Should be able to get it stainless linered and resealed. They did the one on my Mk3 Cortina last year and I have a feeling the one on my V8 will need to be done soon as it feels like stepping on a dead rat when I brake hard
Cost me £100 for the cortina one, Not sure if they do mail order or not though.

hi yes i had a look at the master that came off and it had brake fluid round there well i am not sure if its the servo as that got recon back 3 years ago and only done about 250 milles is there any were else i can get the bore stainless steel i was looking forward to taking the car 2 a few local shows i guess that wont be happing now :(

If you found fluid around where the master bolts to the pedal box then that should be your culprit. Have you removed the piston and inspected the bore? If it's looking good or only lightly corroded inside (feel it with a finger or other suitable blunt implement), you could hone it with a cheap honing kit fitted to your drill and fit new seals to the piston assembly. But if the car stands idle for long periods at a time (eg. doing 250 miles in three years), all of it seems to start to compost itself without any encouragement at all, and then it might be best to sleeve the cylinder as Ron suggests.

yea i am thinking of having it redon i phone that pwer track brakes and they only sell a new master and its cost about £80 is there any where else i can get it stainless steel as thats the way to go and it wont rust inside. at the present monet the car has no brake well not good ones and the engine is running like a sick pig at all happened at once couse there be somthing am i miss well i have check the carbs and timming all smack on iles nice but soon u give it bit of gas it misses so much any ideas

If you've got no brakes, the engine is running rough and both happened at the same time , I'd have a look at the servo
