Caliper Crisis and imminent MOT!!

Hi Guys,

Bit of a never-ending saga with my Girling back calipers I'm afraid. I've refitted and removed them again 3 times this week and completely rebuilt them twice!! :x

My current (and seemingly unresolvable) problem is that the self adjust mech is completely knackered in both calipers. The leading edge of the 'lever' which sits on the 'pawl' and engages the teeth of the plunger is all chipped and cracked and won't grip the teeth any more. I've tried bending them fractionally with a gentle tap in a vice, but whilst I can get them to work on the bench, as soon as they're manhandled back onto the car, they can't take the pressure and start slipping. Needless to say, I can't budge the pads up to the discs, and wouldn't have any confidence in longterm performance if I could.

Does anybody have, or know where I can get, some new (or at least unworn) pawl levers for the calipers?
That's all I need- everything else has just been overhauled and painted, treated to new seals and pads, and is currently owing me the thick end of £100! I don't really want to replace the whole calipers at this stage, but with an MOT due at the end of the month, I need to sort them soon.

Please help me avoid the SORN monster!!

Cheers Guys,

Michael

Are you sure the ratchet has all its teeth on all the way around as well, because when the pawls are worn you often find a few teeth missing off the ratchet as well. I'll look for a couple of pawls tomorrow.

The ratchet (toothed edge wheel) has fared remarkably well and still has all of its teeth. I was quite methodical the first (and second!!) time I rebuilt them, thoroughly cleaning and examining as I went.
I've been trying to take a decent pic of the edge of the lever but can't seem to focus on it. I'll try a different camera tomorrow and post the results. It's definitely suffered a long and punished existence- can't seem to 'grip' the teeth and is battered to hell. Maybe a bad batch... Cheers

Hmmm.... Oh dear. On very, very close inspection of the insides of my calipers, I have come across wear marks which don't look normal.
Does anybody have/or know where I can get a second pair of scrap calipers so I can canabalize the parts together to make one good pair?

Thanks all,
Michael

Very sorry but you just have to strike lucky with ebay or whatever. One ebay seller you could try would be a guy in the Cotswolds who has a hobby job breking P6's. Here's one of his items - ask him the question from within the listing.

There's a fellow that goes by the name of rjjet on flea bay that is forever breaking P6's. I bought some bits off him and was happy with what I got.
