Charging issue 3500 Auto

Hi All, i`m new to the forum, and dont have a lot of expereince with Rover p6`s but have had classic cars for over 20 years, so not completely new ot this.

I always fancies a P5 and bought this one at auction (not running) about a year ago. I have eventually got the engine \ brakes and welding all sorted, and was just starting to use the car when i came across a flat battery.

After recharging the battery i got the car started i measured the battery and it showed approx 12.6v running or not no difference. So obv an alternator issue.

The alternator ignition light did not come on etc. After twisting the bulb holder gently this now works. and showso all the time (does not go out once started)

I found the 4tr and their was no voltage on the + terminals with ignition in I or II position. But i see 12v when the starter moter is psinning. I have the 7/8 wire ignition switch with the isolating points - but i thought these were supposed to supply power in II (run) position, otherwise how does the regulater have a powersource? This is a new ignition switch, so i`m wondering if this is the wrong part.

I ran a temp live 12v wire to the 4tr + terminal and ran the car. After a minute of so the ignition light went out. I measured the battery still the same (12.5 ish). And the dash ammeter also showed no charge. Then after a minute the car radio popped (but not the fuse), and is now toast (no problem only a cheap one). I thought it must have gone overvoltage. So i ran the car again, checked the battery voltage still the same, and put the dvm )dc) on the battery large terminal, i saw the voltage seem to keep changing, too quick for the dmm, and i dont have an analogue one to see the swing.
Am i right in my assumption that the 4tr should be powered with 12v when running?
Do i have a second fault in the alternater itself (diode) with the volt swing, or could that be an issue with the 4tr causing this. Any help appreciated

I had a spare alternator a127 from my mini. And have fitted that for now. It's only a 35a unit so will probably have to change this out. But was a good test before getting a new a127. First time I have ever seen the ammeter register positive, so happy for now
