Different types of rev counter?

Hi All,
I've had a weird problem with my rev counter since I've had the car, it reads 4500 rpm at tickover, and I'm pretty sure the rev counter's stuffed. I've acquired another one, same part number, but it has one less connection than my original one. My original unit had a spade, a female bullet connector, and a male bullet connector, but the new unit is blanked off where the female bullet connector is, leaving a white wire with a yellow stripe & a male bullet connector with nowhere to connect to. The wiring on the car has a spade connector and female bullet connector which are linked together, and the seperate male bullet. When I fit the new rev counter, with the extra lead taped up, the engine won't fire. Are there 2 different types? what's the difference, and how do I resolve it? Any help would be appreciated.. :?:

Hello V8P6B,

There are indeed two tachometers, each with their own part number. The first is 563418 and the second RTC209. The wiring to each is different.

In the case of the former, there are three wires,...white, white and slate, white and black. In the second case, the wires are white, white and black, and then an earth with no colour shown, so assume it to be black.

The connections between the tachometer and distributor for each are also different.

I dare say that you probably need to obtain another tachometer with the same terminals as your original unit.

Ron.

Thanks Ron! I've had a closer look and although the unit casings are identical, the innards are totally different. The interesting thing with my faulty original is that the tamperproof tape has been removed previously, exposing an adjustment screw, which when turned varies the indicated rev speed slightly, so it looks as if someones been playing before.. I might try and have a go at fixing it til I can find a replacement, as its all discrete components inside, and the galvanometer movement is ok. Just need to do some basic fault-finding.. Got nothing to lose

Well, all is sorted now, got a replacement unit from Rich Moon at P6spares, he lives near me, so all is well, and my tickover is now correctly indicated. :)
