Disco Lights?!?

Whilst the P6 was sitting on my drive the other day, engine running and interior light on, I noticed a rythmic but gentle pulsing of the interior light. When driving at night, if I look closely the headlights do the same.

The 11AC alternator was fitted with new brushes and bearings a few years back. I have also fitted a new control box in an attempt to resolve the problem (modern electronic type).

Any ideas?

Very simple - the rectifier is U?S. Not so simple, any one know where to get a new one?

In the meantime I'd be inclined to measure the voltage being generated at idle and at say, 2,000 rpm, just to make sure that the battery is being looked after.

Is it a relatively straightforward job to replace the diodes, i.e. pressing the old out and pressing the new in without destroying the aluminium backplate? I seem to remember reading somewhere that they are heat sensitive and easily fooked if you play the soldering tip on the tail for a millisecond longer than you need to?

Also is this problem likely to have caused any damage, i.e. to the control box or battery?

Well the battery tests itself every time you go to start the car, so you already know any damage that has occoured there. For the control box - unlikely except that a bit of AC current through it might make it chatter a bit, which will ultimately destroy it. That's why I suggested checking the voltage across the battery terminals to make sure it is stable as the engine is first run and then revved. Any damage to the regulator will show up as bizarre events in the battery voltage.
