Dodgy dials...!!!

hello there... i have had my 'new' P6 V8 for a couple of weeks now and there seems to be a strange fault with the dials... firstly when i statr up in the morning the fuel gauge over reads to just beyond the half way mark (it is very rare i have that much juice!) and the temp gauge takes a pretty quick journey into the red... give it twenty minutes or so and then the dials slowly sink back to where they should be, very strange! next up my rev counter is temperamental in that sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and sometimes it just bursts into life halfway through a journey... are there any thought you good people may have?

 Gee...very bizzare...

Three different faults possibly. The temperature transmitter which resides in the inlet manifold can on occasions give problems, and by the sound of your gauge's behaviour, it seems the likely culprit.

Fuel gauge,...possibly the sender within the tank

Tacho,...don't know, not seen that before... :? Possibly remove it, clean the contacts as Dave advised in another thread and refit,..see if it makes a difference.

clean the contacts

Always worth trying this as you'd be surprised how little grime it takes stop good contact in the instruments. I've just had my oil pressure guage out and cleaned the contacts because it was working intermittently. I thought it was the sender but turned out to be dirty contacts on the instrument PCB. A fibre glass pen is very good for cleaning dirty contacts. Brings them up a treat :)

Since both temp and fuel gauges appear to be at fault at the same time, you have a clear indication that you have a problem with the voltage regulator. It is a small box just behind the instrument binnacle, sometimes bolted behind the speedo, that feeds the gauges with 10 Volts DC irrespective of the voltage in the car's electrical system.
Someone more familiar with round dials cars could enlighten you more about the exact position of the voltage regulator.

You could even substitute it for a solid state item, plenty of them on ebay and cheap enough.

As Demetris said, sounds like ur stabiliser is shot. Had the fuel and temp gauges in mine act up at the same time and this was the cause. It's the rectangualr grey plug in unit on the rear of the instrument cluster. With mine i put a volt meter on the connections on the PCB to check the output.

Dave
