Does prototype P7A still exist...?!

Keen to investigate all avenues of P6 development I am keen to find out more about the P7A protoype constructed by Rover in the 1960's... This was going to be the 6-cylinder version of the P6... Here is the car I am keen to track down...

What follows is a quote from http://www.aronline.co.uk

"Apparently 47GYK was a later P7A prototype with revised styling. Remarkably Rover allowed the car to escape into public domain by selling it to Autocar's Edward Eves that then in turn sold it onto a Rover enthusiast. Apparently Rover's experimental department managed to get 140 mph out of these cars."

So does anybody out there have any information on this motor car...?

Quick answer to this one Ash is yes...

It is owned by the renowned Ian Glass. However it needs complete restoration after being botched by a supposed Rover specialist many years ago. It is hoped that eventually it will be going to Clive Annable's for the full treatment.

I'd love to see it. Apparently a fantastic car to drive - oodles of power.

Fascinating...! Has anybody got any pictures of it from more recent times...?

Strictly speaking this is P7/4, ie the fourth P7 prototype. It has rather more than a tad of restyling! The entire front end is different and much longer. The nose treatment is a bit of a lash up by the experimental department. I'd bet a large amount of money that it was meant to look like the front end of "Gladys" the Alvis GTS P6 Coupe. If memory serves it was built from a Talago base unit, and the Talago vented rear 1/4 panels carried over and were joined by a Mk1 Escort like series of vent slots across the rear decker. The bonnet also has very attractive pressed in extract louvres up each side above the inner wing spring humps. I'm pretty sure this one has (reasonably) standard P6 front suspension. Others had early versions of the P8 subframe mounted double wishbone set up.

No. It's stored away and I know of no recent photos. The car was sent to a 'P6 specialist' many years ago, who started on it, then decided to dump it on Ian's drive on day with a note saying they'd stopped doing restorations. As a consquence it needs putting back together, and will need a doner base unit from an early P6.

However - one day I will get to commune with it.
