Draining the cooling system (and re-filling of course!)

For the winter months I think I should completely drain my V8's cooling system and re-fill it with good fresh water and loads of lovely coolant...!!! Could any of you good people out there talk me through the best way to carry out this procedure (along with fluid quantities etc)... Thanks a million in advance!

What's wrong with the old stuff?
To my knowledge nothing...!!! It's just a precaution more than anything else, you cannot put a price on piece of mind... I'd just like to do it as I've only just bought it and want refresh things as it were. I know that may sound peculiar but when I get a new motor I like to give it a thorough going over...

Open the two drain taps on the engine block along with removing the radiator plug, assuming it is still there.

Refit the radiator plug then fill the radiator using your garden hose allowing water to pour from the engine taps. Keep going till the water appears nice and clear.

Empty the radiator and flush it completely. Remove the hoses from the heater box and flush the heater matrix, being careful to ensure that no water can enter the transmission downshift cable where fitted. Refit the hoses.

Close the engine taps and refit radiator plug. You can also change any hoses should you wish to at this time.

Fill the radiator with ready mixed solution of coolant of the recommended concentration, then start the engine. Keep adding coolant till the level reaches full capacity then refit radiator cap. Check for leaks then test drive.

You will notice that the top hose feels softer then usual when hot, but this is normal as air is still within the system. After two days normally, remove the radiator cap on a cold engine and top up the coolant level till it reaches the base of the filler neck while the engine is running at a fast idle speed...say 1000rpm or so,... refit the cap.

All done... :D
