Electric Fans

Hi all, now that summer is on the way, i hope, i'd like to fit electric fans to my 3 cars. At the moment i have one fan sitting in the workshop (i think it's an old kenlowe) which i plan to fit to one car, also retaining the mechanical fan. If the fan is in front of the rad should it be extracting air, or pushing it in towards the engine? Also does anyone know of a suitable electric fan fitted to a modern car which i could find in a scapyard for my other two cars? Again i want it purely as a back up and i want to retain the mechanical fans.

First off, it should push air into the engine bay, through the radiator! If you are having it purely as a back-up to the normal mechanical fan, I would be inclined to keep it simple. Just wire it direct to a manual switch somewhere on the dash, so that you can operate it when you are stuck in traffic. You can easily get matching pull switches to the heated rear window switch with all sorts of different colour warning lights and put it next to the hrw switch. That way the dash will continue to "look right".

Hello Chris,
this is exactly as I did on LRV501G, I even made a circular label to match the HRW switch !
Sadly, I don't have a photograph of this but the new owner Dom (eadmr04 on this forum) may be able to help!
Regards, John

Thanks lads, i think i have an original pull switch in the workshop i can use on one car. The company i work for might also have a labeler to make the original raised lettering lables. I plan to get a supply directly off the solinoid, fit an inline fuse, and switch it through a relay mounted on the inner wing. I'll switch the relay with the dash mounted switch. I want to make the installation as neat and safe as i can. All i need to do now is try and source 2 more fans. I must take a look at a few mordern cars and get the measuring tape out!
