To be honest I feel a bit of a fraud as everyone else appears to be fettling or taking their cars apart whilst all we do is drive him! I

Give it time......

...I think we need a photoshoot of Clive and PAE as the oldest known V8 P6s, or perhaps a photoshoot of Clive with Mark Gray's VVC :?:

Dave

Both would work for me.

FEK looks gorgeous...well done & welcome to the forum!

You don't have to take these cars apart to appreciate them...it's just that there are quite a few (of us!) on here who get terribly itchy fingers if they haven't took any bits off for a while! :D

Enjoy your Three Thousand Five...I'm not jealous in the least!

Hi, this is the blurb from when I bought Clive, the photos would appear not to copy.
Price: £SOLD
You are here:Classic Cars SoldRover1968 Rover P6 3500 Auto1968 Rover P6 3500 Auto
This very genuine and honest P6 3500 Auto has only completed 60,000 miles from new. The Rover stayed within the same family from 1968 to 2004 passing from father to son. Since 2004 the car has been with just one owner.
The car was bought from Timberlakes of Wigan, Lancashire on the 2nd May 1968 and this was the owners first ever brand new car. It was also said to be the first V8 sold in the district. The car was used for pleasure (holidays etc) and was serviced by the owners own Haulage firm. Every four years or so the car was sent to a bodyshop in Leigh for treatment to any corrosion. In the cars lifetime, it has had two re-paints in its original Rover Green. The owner stopped driving in 1989 and the car was garaged and not seen again until the owner’s son inherited the car in August 2000. The car was then transported to a local motor engineer to assess the current condition and to see if putting the car back on the road was viable. Surprisingly the Rover needed very little and was reported to be in very good order considering it had spent so much time off the road. All that was necessary to put the car back on the road was a new battery, new plugs, points and condenser, new fuel pump, new full exhaust and some minor corrosion on the boot floor to be dealt with. The car then passed the MOT, still with the original Avon cross ply tyres!

Once back on the road, a new brake servo, master cylinder and radiator were fitted. The owner also decided to fit an electric fuel pump. Besides this, the car is completely original with no modifications or drilled holes. The car was then sold to the last owner in 2004 with 49,406 genuine miles. This mileage is guaranteed with support from MOT certificates back to new and having being with the same family from new. Since 2004 the Rover has had regular use and has covered over 10,000 miles in this time.

The car drives beautifully with an excellent engine and smooth, quiet automatic gearbox. The running gear all feels and sounds superb as you would expect with a car that is so honest and gently used. The interior is fabulous and all original. Leather, carpets, headlining, door cards and dash are all excellent and tell so much about the life of this car. The interior clearly shows the car has never had a hard life. Chrome work looks original and whilst slightly pitted is very bright and acceptable. The body is straight and in very good order.

Overall a time warp and marvellous to see such a genuine and honest car.

I hope you can show us some photos including interior shots, a great looking car, I am sure it will serve you well. P6's have easy entry and good ride hight, I can imagine the difficulty of ingress and egress of the MG. Welcome.

Ps Lovely colour

Graeme

Surely P6's never came with cross-plys ? Or is that why you remember the advert because of the error ?

You're right, and that's precisely why the ad sticks in my mind.

My my are we not observant! My take on this is that the garage I bought Clive from took their information from letters sent to P6 owner`s club when a previous owner was joining the club. The bill for the new tyres is in my file and when I get the chance I will look it up, I do remember them being very expensive though! I have all this paperwork but as with many things over the years the facts can become somewhat distorted. Knowing Nick at the supplying garage I have never doubted their integrity both as a company and indeed, a famliy.

I`m back again having located the letter written by the son of the original owner which gives the history of the car. This states 100% that the original tyres were Avon cross plies. The corrosion in the boot was due to a damp cloth having been left in it when the car was put away as it were. From all this verified history I can only surmise that the reference to these tyres was an error, but after all these years that might prove difficult to prove!!! As I said, I assume the garage I bought the car from transcribed the information from this letter without investigating whether or not the owner was correct. Maybe his father did specify these Avon tyres, we may never know. The current tyres are Dunlop SP Sports and cost £696.19 pence for the 5 !!!

Well personally I still don't believe you (or him) because the P6 was specifically designed to use Radials so I can't see Crossplies being an option, so if yours had Crossplies then it's unique. Maybe he had a P5B handbook and was looking in that, they ran Avon Crossplies right up to the death.

There is a general trend for people to assume all cars of a certain era had certain features or faults which would make it very easy to misremember something...

how many people think of a 1970s p6 being available with aircon, or power steering for that matter. But how many people assume because its rear wheel drive that it must have cart springs on the back...

only takes a slip of memory to think they were cross ply... easy enough mistake.

Welcome to the forum! That's a beautiful 3500, in a fantastic colour combination! I'd love a series 1 V8 eventually! :D
