Fixed my fuel and temp gauge - never forget the obvious!

OK I've been lacking a working fuel and temp gauge on the V8 for a while now, presumed voltage stabiliser dead so bought one of these semiconductor modern ones a few months back:

Anyway I finally took the dash apart this week and fitted it. Still not working. Hmmm. Check voltage to the stabiliser and nothing. Fine I think, must be the supply to the gauges on the board itself. Unsure how they picked up their supply off th e main cluster, I go to unscrew the 3 large screws on the front of the gauges holding it on so I can have a poke about - which is when I notice then are loose as hell. Which explains why they did work and they stopped when worked loose.

A quick tighten up and the circuit is completed and the gauges work. Running the new stabiliser anyway since I had it.

So moral of the story is check the obvious before crawling under the dash checking wiring runs...

Also refurbed the mechanical fuel pump tonight ready for MOT tomorrow. Fingers crossed...

Indeed

A few years ago I worked for this chap who, in mechanical terms, suffered from delusions of adequacy. He asked me to drive down to Yeovil, some 25 miles, to get him a wiper motor for his Volvo. When I got back, he asked if I was capable of fitting it? No problem I thought and set about removing the stuff under the bonnet, and then removed the glove box to get at the motor itself.

The motor was not connected to the actuating mechanisms, as the nut had fallen off. I put the nut back on and it was fine - no motor needed. He hadn't even bothered to think that it could have been something else apart from the motor
