Flickering rev counter - 1970 2000TC

I wonder if anyone has come across this before, or has any ideas, because I can't think of a logical explanation...... :?

I have had my 2000TC nearly a year and covered quite a lot of miles in it. The persistent problem is the rev counter, which if idling approx 1000rpm at regular intervals - about every 3 - 4 secs ( a guess as I haven't timed it) dips to 800rpm momentarily. No change in engine note, no change in revs. This happens whatever loading is on the electrical system, lights/wipers etc either on or off.

Also - when you press the throttle to accellerate in say 3rd or 4th the rev counter immediately drops by a few hundred revs, then resumes to increase in time with the revs. If you press the throttle gently and accelerate gently the rev counter behaves perfectly, but give a bootful and the rev counter shoots down before returning to match the revs and increasing.

Baffled - particularly with the second scenario - I can't equate the sharp throttle opening to affecting the rev counter. The fault has persisted after a full service when plugs, points, condenser, distributor cap were all changed, also during my use I have had to replace the voltage regulator and have now just had to change the dynamo owing to a faulty bearing - all making no difference!

I would appreciate any suggestions as to cause!
