Fuel reserve light.... when does yours come on?

Just noticed today on the V8 that the fuel reserve light is on, even though it has just under a half tank of fuel... Is this normal?

Should the reserve switch then be pulled even though it still has plenty of fuel?

just seems strange, we're fairly new to these cars :D

its an orange light over the analogue clock, our haynes manual says its a fuel reserve light

I know my petrol is getting low when the the engine starts to splutter and I have to pull the reserve fuel switch :) .

As Stina says, sounds like this is the choke warning light. It is supposed to come on when the engine/carbs have warmed sufficiently and you should turn the choke off. When you turn the choke off by fully pushing the choke switch in, the orange light should go out.

Really :?: mine comes on as soon as I pull my choke out and goes out when I put it back in :!: I thought it was just a reminder light to warn you that the choke is still on. If the above is correct what do I need to do to make it work properly :?:

Hello Guy,
Sounds like you need to replace the 'Otter' switch that sits in the top of the inlet manifold. It's a fun job, trying to get the little bolts out in one piece. Good luck!

Hi Roly, thanks you make it sound tricky how important is it to be working as I mainly use my car around 8-10 mths of the year usually laid up Nov to Feb but when in use used practacaly daily. During the warmer months she has no need for the choke to start.

It's not important at all.

It is only there to tell you that your engine has warmed up and your choke is out, it doesn't do anything else.

Phewww thats a relief thanks Richard
Thats how I've been using it as a reminder ignorance is bliss sometimes

Where are all the NADA experts when you need them? I can't remember whether NADA cars had it as a low fuel warning light, but I could have deamt that, I never touch the things myself.
