fueling troubles when cold

Bearing in mind my choke works most of the time, it's sometimes a bit sticky, and i recently noticed it's missing the outer cable clip.

This (cold) morning i went to fire her up but took a hell of a lot longer than usual.
Just cold i thought.
Plenty of fuel in tank, but once started i'd rev it and i'd get a stutter and a knock (or pop if you like) from under bonnet. Then i'd rev it again, full rev range. Then again and the pop and stutter.

What is actually making this noise?
Clearly fuel isn't quite getting through properly, is it a build up of pressure?
(My car has an electric fuel pump fitted before i bought the car)

I eventually took it out in the road and once fully warmed up, everything was dandy.

Anyone know what this noise is/experienced similar?

The noise could be the piston in the carb bouncing up and down and knocking on the bridge of the carb because there isn't any oil in the dashpots so the damper isn't working. This can also cause the poor running.

Thanks Harvey,
it definitely sounds like its coming from thereabouts.
I cleaned and topped them up a couple of weeks ago, but i'll check them again tomorrow- Too damn dark now!

Sure is.
What's the prefered type of oil for them, and level?
I just topped up with 3in1, but noticed it's a lot lighter than the oil that was in previously.

SAE20 is the correct oil IIRC, but at this time of year the cold weather will make the oil thicker so 3in1 should be fine. You could top up with something thicker in the summer should the need arise.

Topped up carbs and no noise as yet, plus it started a lot easier, so i hope that's the end of that.

Spent a while trying to fabricate a choke cable clip to attach the outer cable to the carb (too much time not enough money), but it turns out it doesn't really affect the choke operation afterall. Needed another set of eyes to confirm this though
