Gearbox - Auto to Manual Conversion

The auto on my 1974 P6B requires replacement. I have been told that a 5 speed manual gearbox (19a) from an SD1 will fit without too many modifications. (Rear mounting, speedo recalibration, flywheel, clutch, pedal rack.) Has anyone any experience of this modification and can give advice. I am in New Zealand.

Ah hah! A fellow kiwi! :)

I've just replaced the 4-spd manual in my S with an SD1 5 speed. Speedo drive is also different, requires a different cable and it needs to enter the car by the passenger seat rather than back under console. Different driveshaft length too, at least from the 4-spd, not sure about the auto. Exhaust on an auto may also have to be changed.

Approximate cost for this was $1200 including new clutch pressure and friction plate.

That was on top of rebuilding the 5-spd. You may find it hard to source a good LT77 (that's the SD1 gearbox) over here. I had one conveniently sitting in the shed but finding a few parts required for the rebuild was a little difficult. There is the Toyota conversion of course, but then you start talking BIG wallet material.

If you want to talk to someone, call Mal Clark at By'Gone Auto in Beachhaven. (09) 483 3991. He prep's and maintains all sorts of classics, does a lot of work on Rover's and usually had two or three in the w'shop. He has also built and races a rather mean bright organge P6. If anyone can help he can.

hi,
the propshaft from your auto is the right length for the conversion as your auto box and the 5 speed sdi box are the same length. i have the pedal box and bits and pieces you will need, you just need to find a gearbox.
