gearbox problems-2200 sc - main shaft failure?

I am having gearbox problems on my car, which has meant an engine/gearbox removal to sort out.I had initially problems in getting 2nd .gear while on the move. The garage that usually does the bulk of the "heavy work"for me has sent gearbox off for a rebuild and they have said that the mainshaft has sheared. What I would like to know is :1) if I drove the car to them in the first place could I do this with a broken main shaft?.and 2) what could cause loss of 2nd gear while on the move?-it works fine ,engine running, but vehicle stationary.

Interesting question. I don't know the gearbox well but generally although it would be possible for the mainshaft (in any gearbox) to be broken but still be possible to get drive through a gearbox I would have thought at the very least incredibly noisy.

Are you suspicious that they aren't telling the truth?

When the combination of age, a heavy right foot and a busy intersection caught up with the gearbox in my 'S', 2nd, 3rd, 4th got me home, with a little extra noise. 1st and reverese no go.

But when I went to move the car after sitting for a couple of weeks while having a replacement 5 spd rebuilt, could not engage gear and seized solid on the input side when it finally did. Didn't bother opening it up to see what had gone on inside, it was for the knackers anyway.

I'm not sure of the main/layshaft arrangement, but if it's sheared between clusters, it might still be possible to get drive through the layshaft and primary shaft.
