Handbrake woe

I can't find the slipper. I have some here somewhere, but by the time I find them you'd be better putting a "Wanted" ad here. Someone will have all you need. I have the shim to hand, but that's it, and that's no good on its own.

Thanks for looking H.

I'll have a look this evening. After stripping down a pile of calipers, the remaining bits can't have become buried too deep yet...

Cheers Willy...appreciate it. Let me know if they've burrowed themselves too deep, and I'll put a wanted ad up.

You're in luck, they were easily to hand. All a bit rusty but nothing that a good scrape and a smear of copper grease can't solve.
Drop me a PM with your address and a list of exactly what you need and I'll gather 'em up.

Meanwhile... I can't help thinking that it would be easy to make non-rusting slippers out of brass if it was available in the correct thickness. Probably not a lot of point though really. :?

It would only make a difference on the rear ones anyway, because the fronts have the spring steel shim on top of them.

Stan,
If your still looking for any bits, I've got some genuine new Girling fitting kits. AFAIK, they have the shims, lock tabs & the left & right handed anti-rattle spring clip thing, that rests against the edge of the outer pad.
Roly.

Hi Roly,

Many thanks for the kind offer, but Willy E put a selection of GSH bits in the post to me and Occie's back together with (I think!) a decent handbrake again.

It's MOT day tomorrow :) and I was waiting for that before I posted thank-you's and a sign-off etc. on the thread.

Thanks again,

Stan

Easter well past but Happy Bunny Day today with a new 12-month ticket.

After sorting the N/S rear pad I reset both the rear pad gaps with the discs out a la Harvey, but used a disc-thickness MDF former to avoid having to keep lugging the disc upwards whilst lying on my back.

Today's brake readings (last year's in red)

Service Brake

O/S/F 310 lock (290)

N/S/F 310 lock (290)

O/S/R 230 (180)

N/S/R 220 (160)

Handbrake

O/S 200 (180)

N/S 190 (160)

Normal kerb weight for a 3500S is 1306 kgs (not sure what bits like the Vitesse wheels + LT77 do to that) + I believe the MOT bible adds another 140 kgs for driver, tools, etc. This gives 74% and 27% respectively for service brake and handbrake efficiency, against the minima required of 50% and 16%.

So, although it's a bit of a shame about the slight imbalance on the rears, I'm fairly happy with that.

Many thanks to Willy E for popping a selection of slippers, shims, and bolts in the post...and to Harvey for pointing out my eyes might not be what they once were! :)

brake pad keeper plates on ebay here

to be honest you could make that in 5 mins with a drill and a file.

Absolutely, but to be honest Pat, I'd always go for GSH parts if they're available. Avoids having to worry about materials, heat-treatment etc.
