Head light upgrade

Gentlemen,

I use my car most weekends, 1969 Series 1 P6 3500, but until recently have not used it in total darkness. My wife and I are going to Sheringham in Norfolk in a couple of weeks for the weekend and I was wondering if any of you have improved the head lights particularly main beam.
My lights were adjusted by my friendly MOT man on his machine and two weekends ago I drove back from Hatfield to Bedford from a mates wedding at midnight and was amazed on how little light falls out of the front of the car on main beam, I know that my van has modern lamps that light up the night sky on Dip but there must be a way of improving the current sealed beams on my Rover.

Thanks,

Martin P

There are a few options.

New sealed beams might be better than what you have.

Replace with halogen lamps as found on Triumphs and other cars. I think that the Stag owners club were selling them. But the usual suspects will be able to source them. Rimmer bros or check with WIPAC to see if they have stockists near you.

I got a set of 5 & 3/4 inch lamps from a scrap yard. They came out of a jaguar XJ40 and work a treat. I would consider fitting relays if you do just to be safe.

There is a thread on here about having all 4 headlamps light up on dipped beam . Some debate about legality I won't repeat
If you do a straight swap you shouldn't need a relay as the load is the same but the dip switch and fuse boxes are a bit marginal so it wouldn't hurt

Try a set of uprated standard wattage H4 bulbs and you should be well pleased
