Hi Guys,
First post for me!
Just bought a car with a P6 V8 engine in and a 4 speed manual box, it was barely running when i bought it but i cant start it now at all.
I think the timing is out of sort but am not sure where to start?? Im not a novice with engines but this is my first V8!
what i need to do is set it up from cold in a position that will get it started again and then tune it in from there??? does that make sense???
Any help would be appreciated or links to internet sites that may help, or a good book etc!

haynes manaul :)

you need to find TDC on the compresion stroke first of all; unless the timing gears have been messed about with, then you can rely on the timing pointer - you should see a metal pointer o nthe timing case at about 11 o'clok position near the crank pulley - this will have timing marks, usaully 2 degree marks going 10 degree BTDC to 10 degrees after.

Once you have found the compression stroke (remove psark plug, put finer over the hole and turn engine with a wrne, you fell your finer being pushed by the air that the piston is pushing) put it at about 6 degree BTDC (Before top dead centre).

loosen the clamo hodling the diztributor and if you have a light, connect that to the coil LT side and other to ground.

when the point open, the bulb will (lemmme think... ) turn on and this is when t he spar would occur. You rotat the distributor until this happens (you can do without the bulb and use the HT lead from the coil held close to and earth e.g .engine blcok).

NB - after having written all of that ^^^^ you should really get a haynes as there may be some errors but it gives you an idea of whjat is involved to set the STATIC timing (sorry don't have time to go over the detail)
