Im going to get a new jack, what are you guys using ? seen mentioned Hi lift jacks, are these better ? I like to have room under the car and dont want to use blocks of wood on a jack to get the height so as to then use axle stands, Is that what these are designed for?

I only have a little Halfords 2 tonne trolley jack and was recently eyeing up a pro 3 tonne item in a local tool shop something like this http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000g-3-tonne-professional-garage-j. What put me off the one I was looking at was that I didn't know what the minimum saddle height was. This Clarke one goes from 120mm to 520mm which I think would fit under a P6 OK. I suspect you gave to be careful though - while most of these professional type jacks lift to 500-600mm, some of them have a min. saddle height of as much as about 200mm which might be too high to get it under some parts of car bodies/chassis. For example, I usually jack up my P6 using the front crossmember. As this is only about 6 or 7" off the ground, I was worried that some of the bigger jacks wouldn't fit under there?

Even my little 2 tonne jack with a couple of slabs of 1" thick hardwood is enough to get my car safely onto axle stands with enough room to work underneath. So, I reckon something like the Clarke one in the link would do an adequate job.

With the 3 tonne you get an extra tonne of capacity, and 145mm of extra lift, for only 6 quid more, so it's a no-brainer really IMHO.
