Could be loosely described as a re-bodied 1800/2200 Kimberley/Tasman, Ron.

Now those I have seen Chris, not too many in recent years though. From memory they had an airbag rear suspension, which gave them a brilliant ride.

Ron.

Just Hydrolastic I think Ron. The later stuff got Hydragas but it all did work rather well until the pipes rusted.
We certainly got (and probably built) Princesses in NZ but I think Oz was a bit more selective about what they let in.

In my mind the Austin princess suffered from a double whammie with the now well known quality issues with BL built cars of the day and having an association with the the Austin brand which in NZ was seen as perhaps somewhat stodgy and awkward most especially when seen with the competing ford escorts of the day and coupling that with the somewhat different styling of its body shape, somewhat SD1 ish but whith out the engine power to back the styling up.....

Confirming kiwirover's "probably built", Princess's were assembled in NZ at the Nelson plant, Princess 1.8 litre between July 1977 until August 1979 (2352 built), and the Princess 2.0 litre from August 1979 until February 1982, 1908 built (4260 in total) info sourced from Mark Webster's book "ASSEMBLY, New Zealand Car Production 1921-98"

Hi Eddie
Remember meeting you and your dad at the 2009 SAAR.
Good to see you here!
Hope your Dad's car still as superb as I remember it.
Cheers
Nick

thanks for the comments, yes nick ,its still just as good, not taking it out this year though, using the princess :D

The same thought had occured to me too! I hardly dare imagine what you'd need to do to the suspension, steering and brakes of a Princess to handle all that extra power though!

Chris

Ambassador used a 2ltr O series, so it should be a fairly easy swap too, I bet it just bolts straight to the princess gearbox, I have seen somebody claiming princess 1800 box is compatible.

As for suspension and brakes, I don't suppose you'd accept "just drive carefully" as a valid option ???

Question is would montego or 800 have common parts on the braking front???

A pimped up ambassador would definitely be at least a talking point :)
