If I refurbish the brakediscs for my P6 V8, what´s the minimum thickness? I need to grind some of the rust away to make them look nice again. I live in Sweden so if anyone knows the minimum thickness in millimeters, I´d really appreaciate it. (We´ve got the metric system).
Because if I buy them from my local supplier they are 80 pounds apiece, and grinding say one millimeter will cost me about 15-20 punds apiece. If there´s no risk of lessening the brakepower I´m inclined to refurbish the discs before buying new ones.
front disc min thick 11.43mm, 12,7 new
rear disc min thick 8.38mm, 9.65 new.
thats from the factory manual.
I assume a machine shop is going to grind/skim the discs - make sure you have a dail gauge to check the run out when rebuilding, and be aware the thnner they are, the less effective they will be........
The P6 is over braked anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about a slight skim.
I have done the ... ahem... "angle grinder" skim in the past just to remove surface rust caused the car being stood. This would have been removed by some heavy braking anyway.
