Ignition Switch P6b

My P6b ignition switch is playing silly buggers with me.
The car will fire on contact using the key.
As soon as I release the key the motor will die.
I have to hold the key onto full contact for a lot longer so that she will stay fired up before releasing the key.
A Google search has suggested using only specialist WD40
Question I have; is the switch stuffed? would a shot of WD40 Fast Drying Contact Cleaner into the key barrel sort the problem.
I don't want to put WD40 Fast Drying Contact Cleaner in places it shouldn't be.
Maybe someone on here has had fix for this problem that Im not aware off.

Hi, there's not much point squirting it into the barrel bit, it needs to go in the switch section at the back where the electrical contacts are. Having said that, are you sure whether it's the switch part or the barrel mechanical parts that are the problem? Try taking the switch part off the end and testing each part separately to identify the guilty party, ie. which is the sticky bit.

Im not sure what the problem is.
It feels mechanical as I have to physically hold the key in the start position without releasing too soon.
Sometimes it works and then another time she will die.
I thought I would start with the easier solution ie Fast Drying Contact Cleaner. Just didn't want to create a bigger problem using WD40.
I like what you've suggested re the rear switch part removal

Have had another play with the ign and key.
After motor has fired up ,I then give the key a slight push into the barrel and she stays fired .
Good to get a solution for the time being but will need to find a more permanent fix.
Could be a worn barrel

Doubt if it is the barrel causing your problem, I can withdraw my key completely and it does not effect the running.(first series)

Ignition switches for none steering lock cars are easy and relatively cheap to replace . The barrel part only rotates the switch and does not load it in any way so I suspect the switch rather than the barrel

Do you think a squirt of WD would help without creating something somewhere else?

WD40 would start gathering dust....not good.

apparently the WD40 contact cleaner does the job and dries off with no residue to attract dust.
Anyway through frustration I put a squirt into the barrel.
Instant short term result -Im relieved it now starts perfectly on the key with no added forward pressure
I guess time may prove me wrong ,so watch this blog.
