hi guys, i was turning the engine over , then tried stopping, turning thr key off, but the starter kept on going , the only way to stop it , was removing the battery clamp, was is wrong please . paul

What sort of car do you have?

I expect its a P6, but what year and engine size?

Forget that - its in the V8 section. :?

It sounds like your ignition switch is jammed - what happens when you reconnect the battery?

It could also be the starter relay.

Still be useful to know what year, what gearbox and what suffix your chassis number is.

hi quattro, my car is a stag, auto which i am fitting with a 3.5 p6 v8 engine.the stag engine was rubbish, broke down so many times with a lot of money spent on it .any way when i tried to replace the battery cable it turns the engine over again. could it be a stuck starter??, its a new one!!. i will try to hit the starter {wood between them } with a hammer, to see if its the fault. if its not that i will look at the switch and wiring thanks paul. ps. i let you know how i get on!!.

its the ignition switch, i know someone who has had this issue before. best thing to do is take the ignition switch out and clean all the contacts and make sure all the moving parts move freely. failing that, check the relay as quattro said, but i strongly suspect the ignition switch. it wouldnt be the starter because in order for the starter to turn there has to be a power supply.
hope this helps

I don't know how you have your car wired Stagman, but my car is wired as in the pic below.

The ignition switch feeds the relay at W1 and goes to earth through W2 turning on the switch (relay)

This then allows the current to pass through from C2 to C1 and feeds power to the Starter.

There is another, larger, relay in the starter. The engine cannot turn over on the small wires from the relay.

The main power comes straight from the junction under your feet which is fed directly from the battery.

So, it is possible for the relay insdie the starter to jam and work independantly from the igniton switch and the relay on the inside of the wing.

If you have it wired the same as the diagram, disconnect the wire at C1.

Then reconnect the battery. If it turns the engine, your starter is at fault.

If not, then check for live at W1 with the ignition OFF - if live here the ignition switch is at fault.

If W1 is not live, check at terminal C1, which now has no wire connected to it. If live here but not at W1, the relay is at fault.

I hope that makes sense :?
