Indicators - check on indicator switch

Hello all, - I have read through the other Indicator posts but have yet to spot the same question as mine.

My indicators have stopped working. (the Hazards work OK i.e Hazard lamp on dash and x4 bulbs work OK).

The flasher relay is OK because I have swapped with the hazard unit and both function, and no fuses have blown

Q please - with ignition on, I get 12V at both the X (Live) and L (to indicator switch) connectors on the flasher unit

However, when operating the indicator stalk, I get no change.

Can you confirm how I can check if the indicator stalk is working. - can you recall the wiring colour.

Many thanks
Simon

It could possibly be the hazard light switch as the indicators are on the ignition circuit and the hazards on the permanent 12V circuit. The hazard switch swaps these over and avoids shorting these two together. The switch has an 6 way connector block. You can disconnect this and jumper together the two wires which are light green and brown (it's the only ones which are a pair the same colour in the block).

Operate the hazard switch on and off a good few times and then see if your indicators start working.

My P6 didn't have hazard warning lights so I retrofitted them. I had two switches and one had very badly pitted contacts and wouldn't operate reliably. I'm guessing the first thing to do is contact cleaner them operate the switch many times.

I have had the opportunity today to operate the Hazard switch many times , but no change to the functioning of the indicators. Loos like I need to remove the hazard switch and clean contacts. Surprising because the indicators just stopped functioning, no intermittent operation expected if contacts were pitted / dirty.

Electrics, not my strong field - but can you check the indicator stalk is at fault - I guess both switches to RHS / LHS indicators cannot fail simultaneously

Correct which is why I suggested what I did. It sounds like the circuit between the indicator flasher and the switch is broken somewhere if the switch itself physically hasn't fallen apart. The first suspect for this is the hazard switch as stated. If you open the glovebox and look at the steering column and have a multimeter it is very easy to check the connectivity. There are two, large, triangular (6 way) female bullet receptacles, one for each side with a green/red and green/white wire. This is as you'd expect for Left/right. The light green/brown wire is joined in a similar connector is the feed from the relay. I only did this retrofit for my car a few weeks ago, so it's fresh in my mind. If you were down the road (unlikely as I live in Zürich) I could fix it for you in 10 minutes. Even if you aren't an electrical expert, then a quick look here for loose wires might be helpful. One possible culprit is while using the glovebox something snagged and pulled a wire.

Peter,
I fixed the indicator problem ( no flashers despite hazards working) ,
Rookie error. I found a redundant / duplicate set of wires presumably for a towing relay in the past.
Opening the glove box dislodged the wires and fumbling around in the dark led me to use one of the redundant set. Hence the confusion.
All good now so thanks for inputs

Good job. Yes, you simply wouldn't expose the wiring in a modern car the same way as a P6. When I added the extra wiring for hazards, I made sure they were tucked well away.

Indeed. The redundant set of wires for another flasher (eg towing) was interesting. They look to come from the main loom, but presume that is not standard. Difficult to get access to examine in detail
Cheers

P6's had the take off points for the towing electric's as standard in the boot area . a spare set of bullets sleeves in the rear harness. They are detailed in the wiring diagram

That’s interesting, so if I’m right, the towing flasher can would be connected local to the hazard and indicator flasher cans. I should have checked the wiring diagram I guess..
When I bought the car 28 yrs ago as a 20 something, it had a tow bar mounted, but I removed it as not cool in those days.
