Interminent problem

Fuel -Temp Gauge.

My Temp gauge has never worked, the fuel part has been problem free. I replaced the gauges (kindly given one by member from here ) and the tempt gauge was showing a reading. Problem solved. Now, the fuel guage works but only on a part time basis. I can start the car and drive all day with the reading being zero petrol and then,it will start to read a quarter of a tank or, as it did yesterday, it decided to read the correcrt amount 3/4 of a tank. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I would be inclined to point the finger at the sender unit within the fuel tank.

To eliminate the sender, refit your original gauge. The temperature won't work, but if the fuel level works normally, then you can eliminate the sender and your replacement gauge will be the culprit.

Hi Deadstar. Sorry to hear you're having problems with my gauges. Another thing you could try to eliminate the gauge or the sender is to ground the fuel tank sender wire to the chassis. This should give you a full tank indication. If you don't get this, then the gauge could be faulty (I did test both gauges before sending them), or there is a poor connection in the wire from the tank sender to the gauge, the latter may have occurred when you disturbed the gauges and wiring. Another thing you could try is to swap the plug-in regulator pack from the rear of your old gauge. Its like a little oblong metal box. If memory serves, it just plugs in on spade sockets, however, I would assume if this was faulty you'd have a problem with both fuel & temp gauges.

Hi - I don't think its the gauges at fault, I have now noticed that the gauges work on a part-time basis lol - So somedays I get a good idea whats in the tank and how hot/cold the engine is, other days they both just take the day off - it makes journeys more interesting/exciting lol :) I will try what you suggested and let you know if that works.
